I'm in the midst of finishing up prereqs for med school but have taken a couple semesters off to have a baby. It was my first pregnancy, so I wasn't sure how I'd be affected by nausea, etc. and decided to play it safe by not continuing classes last spring. Baby was born in August, so I took this semester off as well, since I figured I wouldn't be sleeping much at night for at least several weeks or months.

So my question is. . . would the on again/off again classes look bad to adcoms? If I take classes for the next 3 semesters (including summer), and then have to take a semester or two off again if I have another baby, will this look as if I'm not committed? I can't imagine being 7-9 months pregant and/or having a baby in the middle of a semester and don't imagine most profs would be very accomodating. I'm in my thirties, so holding off on childbearing is not a good option for me.

Anyone out there with a similar situation and been through it already?

It doesn't really matter if you take off to have a child. I think you are wise to be cautious since you never know what type of complications you may have during pregnancy. I was down almost a year from complications - very hard to go to school and be sick. Just be sure that your application is strong when you apply. They may ask you in an interview why you had breaks but they may not. Adcoms admit those they think will do well on the board exams the first time and will be able to handle the work load. How long it takes you to get your pre-req's down really is up to you.
