I had emergency appendectomy surgery last week and am going in for my 1-week follow-up visit with my surgeon on wednesday. I met her (my surgeon) for the first time 10 minutes before surgery and she was very cool. I asked her tons of questions and told her my interest in medicine (as I am a pre-med non-trad). So she is well aware of my interest in medicine.

My question for ya'll is do you think it would be too forward if I ask to shadow her? Or, ask her if she knows any physicians who would be ok with me shadowing them.

I want to ask, but I do not want to come across too forward. Any tips on how I go about doing this?

Also, I had my surgery at Emory Hospital in Atlanta and I've contacted the Chief of Anesthesiology a few weeks prior where he said that they do not allow shadowing anymore at that hospital. However, my surgeon is a "contractor" so she doesn't work directly for the hospital.

Thanks in advance for the help!

It can't hurt to ask.

My guess is you're probably not going to be able to shadow at that particular hospital. I would think that saying "no shadows" probably greatly simplifies HIPPA stuff and the like, while a policy of "no shadows, except people that 'contractors' bring in" would greatly complicate it. But who knows, maybe your surgeon also contracts somewhere more shadow-friendly.

If not, she might be willing to point you toward somewhere that would let you watch a day in the life of some surgeon.

Ask! Im sure they can totally relate, having gone through this horrible application/pre-med process before. Plus, if you come off as silly or forward you will probably never see them again...unless you get gallstones or something. In that case prepare for the ultimate humiliation 😀

I think "no shadowing" is the most assinine rule a hospital can have

- also, I thought this was going to be a thread asking if op should ask his surgeon to go out with him...

ha, sorry to disappoint you!

And you would think that they would allow shadowing since it is Emory hospital...which is connected with the med-school...oh well.

I mean, she's already seen him naked...

damn, youre right! Sh%^ i totally forgot about that haha

Hospitals can be very risk averse, not just with HIPAA but concerns about infection control (if you touch a drape in the OR), slip & falls (what if you pass out in the OR), etc. It is just easier to say "no" to everyone.

Most medical care is not delivered in the hospital inpatient units. Ask if you can shadow in clinic. In my opinoin, you get a much better picture of medicine when you see physicians talking wiht patients (and their families) t han you get by watching procedures that are performed while the patient is anesthetized.
