Just wondering what everyone's thoughts are concerning these procedures as a dentist/future dentist. There are risks associated with all surgeries and eye surgery is no exception whether it be LASIK, PRK, or any other type of procedure. So basically, as someone who wants to be a dentist, do you think getting corrective vision surgery is a good idea?

If you are a good candidate (large corneal depth, no systemic diseases, no dry eye etc.) then yes it is a good procedure. However, the laser ablates your corneal nerves which detect your tear film moisture level and in turn this causes dry eyes in some people. Refractive surgery complications are highly under reported but for most people it is safe I'd say and mild dry eye doesn't affect them. It is wise to go to a third-party consultant like an optometrist because in most states we do not perform the surgery ourselves. There are alternatives such as orthokeratology. Kind of like braces for the eyes where you just wear a lens retainer overnight 🙂

I'm wearing contacts forever. I don't like the idea of being stuck with potential problems the rest of my life
If I was going into another profession that didn't require such visual accuity I would consider it. However, I dont like the risk of complications that might make my future work more complicated than just wearing glasses or contact lenses. I'm not saying it's rational - just my feelings.
