I've been getting e-mails from my professors - classes start on Tuesday - and my Genetics professor said our syllabus and notes were up on Blackboard. I thought maybe just the first day of class notes would be up there, but no. Everything for the whole semester is already up from what I can tell.

I don't have my textbook yet - waiting on it to ship to my house - but all the notes are up. I know Genetics is a difficult course for some.. so would you take advantage and start studying for it now? Or would you just wait till class begins to see the pace of how the professor teaches?

I know it's normally not a good idea to begin studying before a class begins, but come on.. he's put it all up already! How could I not take advantage!

PS: I'm not sure I should dislike him already because all the slides are in Comic Sans. 👎

This is the first time I've had a class with everything up and ready to go. My last science professor used to put the slides up after lecture, but not before, so this is new to me.

I like to fully indulge in the joy of my break until the dreaded first day of class.

I usually do as well, but I've gotten increasingly more bored as the break has gone on. This happens every break, and then after the first week of classes, I'm ready to be on break again.

It's up to you and you alone. The majority of people here, I'm sure, will attack you with their inane bitchiness and discourage you from pre-studying (although I'm sure many do pre-study, but will not admit it). If you think you will find benefit from it, go ahead. 👍

I won't attack you with inane bitchiness, but I can tell you true that there's no chance in hell I'd pre-study for any college class, ever.

i wouldn't pre study enjoy your break and give your brain a break

i took genetics and almost got 100 on each exam I thought it was going to be tough

but it was basically some review of the concepts from bio 2 with mendelian genetics

nothing too heavy probably depends on your professor also

college isn't that hard. pre-studying = waste

Nah, enjoy your break and watch some of that roccos modern life 🙂 There's no reason why you should have to start studying early. It's about studying smart, not studying for a long time

Thanks, everyone. I figured it would be pointless to do so, which is why I knew you guys would talk me out of it.

I'm still trying to work on that. Flashcards are losing their touch on me, so I need to find new ways to work on things that don't involve just practice problems, like math.

Honestly, I wouldn't even study for like the first 3 weeks of the class and then when the test comes around I'd get ready accordingly. I'm going to medical school.

I too agree with indulging in your break as long as possible. I'm doing some light reading for two of my classes for when I start next week but nothing too in depth. So enjoy it while it's here and don't think twice about it! 😀

this kind of attitude is why america ranks so low in math and science. in my day, i would use the breaks to read through the entire textbook so that i could obtain a mastery of the material before the first day of classes.

Did you also trek to school both ways, while it was snowing, with no shoes on?

Edited to add: I'm assuming your response was facetious, so my response to you will be the same way.

Don't lose faith in 'merica. I am similar to you.

If there is pre-reading assigned for the first lecture, I'd do it, but aside from that, enjoy the hell out of the rest of your break.

I've had a few classes now with all of the material posted before school starts. I usually glance through the notes just to see if there are any concepts from previous courses I may have forgotten, and if so, I brush up on those topics. All of my attempts at pre-studying for the sake of trying to learn everything before class have ended before finishing the first chapter of the book 🙂

Oh, there's way too much information to learn everything, and I don't even have the book yet. But I figured if I took a few notes from the slides from the first lesson then I'd be ahead. No matter, I'm gonna enjoy the last four days I have of break and worry about it on Tuesday 🙂

Word of advice: There is nothing sweeter than procrastination.
