I was kinda depending on this but I think it is amazing they have this program and it is very appreciated. Anyone need information on getting it I would be glad to share.

yeah, how long did it take you to get approved for it? after mailing in your forms that is?

they told me that it takes about a week for the to start the application once the forms get to their office, and then 15 business days after that. is that accurate???

also, do they email you when they receive your forms or only when they make a decision? i've been waiting on this for a while and i can't wait to hear from them to get my ACMAS in!!!

thanks!

Good questions... You're right they DO NOT email you when the form is received. They receive them and start working on them immediately. AMCAS appears to work in piles. So when you call them they will tell you the date of the pile they are working on and that is how you should know when you might get your answer.

I overnighted my package so I knew what pile they would be working on when. I got it there by the 26 or 27 and just got the email today. LOL, I am so poor it is not even funny... This is a god send.

You can do it online. I got my rejection within 15 minutes 🙁. My parents made just over the level they establish. I think in all actuality, me having a job is what did me in. Oh well.

You can't do it on line when you have a job. If you put in figures that are above their threshold you'll get a rejection but if they want you to mail things in, i.e. proof of taxes and blah blah bhlah then most likely you'll be approved if everything is correct.

lol, thanks man! i hope you meant the 26th or 27th of JUNE though and not May, hahaha. I got it in about the same time in June and i was expecting to wait about a month.

Yea, it was June for sure. So it really didn't take long at all. All they really have to do is verify one is really that poor and you'll get it. If they give you a rejection then you're rejected.

I was able to complete the application while employed. Obviously it looks better if you aren't employed even if you only have a small amount of money coming in.

LOL, no I am employed too... but it just doesn't pay much... You're parents probably did you in... Where as mine didn't...

i'm looking to apply when the time comes to take the mcat. i was wondering if one of you who got approved, or who know for that matter, could tell me what the level of income is that parents need to qualify. pm me if you want. thank you and congrats.

I also have a question. FAP gives you 12 free med school applications. But what if you initially apply to 5 and then later add schools? Do you guys know if you get another 7 free apps or do you start paying?

Just how poor do you have to be? I may qualify...

You are your parents must make below 300% the poverty level (which is about $60,000 a year for a 4 person household)

Oh, and to someone else's question, AMCAS covers the cost up to 12 schools no matter when you apply

both your parents, or just the one under which you are a dependent, if they are divorced? thank you.

$60,000 is very different depending on whether you live on Long Island or the backwoods of West Virginia. 😱

you pay 30 for each next one

Yay!

The FAP program is BS. I'm 32 years old and don't have anything to do with my parents finances and AAMC still requires this info.

TM

I got approved my FAP about a week after sending my stuff out, they were actually quite fast.

If you don't recieve support from your parents, say so in your application, send only your stuff in, the worst that can happen is a rejection.

i never applied for this and i guess it may have been worth a shot. i've still got credit card bills from applying for med school twice--if you think you might qualify, just do it!! it will save you tons of money--esp. in secondary fees!!

whattt. I had no idea it was 60,000. Damn, I didn't understand it (the 300% below thing) mine made wayyyyy wayyyy less than that. Ahh well it's water under the bridge but still.

Yes I got it too. It seems the online application is just there to provide a blanket rejection for every single person who applies. I had to appeal the process, as it was clear my own situation was in need of a little help.

good thing is, most schools waive your secondaries as well if u qualify for fap.

Can you link the source? When I applied it was 200% above the poverty line. My parents made less than 60k the year I applied and I didn't have a job and I was still denied.

Does anyone know if you get rejected for FAP whether schools will still consider waiving your secondary fees? I make very little (. . .AmeriCorps), so it would be nice to have that fee waived, at least.

I recall some schools will consider waiving fees if you provide info like tax returns or something. It'll say on their secondaries.

anyone know if I qualify for FAP for this cycle, and I don't get in anywhere, if I can reapply for FAP next application cycle and get the same "12 free school applications + free secondaries" deal next year? thanks

Yep, you can qualify for a certain number of cycles consecutively.

Is this done in the same way as financial aid in that if you are married they won't even look at your parents' income?

unfortunately they look at parents' income in every situation (unless they are no longer living), even if youre 35 years old and youve been living on your own for who knows how long. Yeah, it's a little weird.
Having a spouse adds to the total income too 🙄
