I am a newbie here, and just by browsing thru, its actually scaring the heck outta me.

I have applied to 10 school and have not yet heard anything from them. I am not a biology major or chem major. I have a degree in Computer Science. Recently I have planned to come back to school for a career in dentistry. I have took the DAT and didnt score to good. I scored a 16 overall.

What are my chances of getting in? My undergrad gpa is purty low its 2.89.
I am still working on finishing my organic II, biochem, microbio, and human ant. What should I do? What are my chances for an interview?

Here are some school to which i have applied to: West Virginia, Virginia Common Wealth, Nova , Arizona, Detriot Mercy, Tennesse, Alabamma, .....

Your input will be greatful! Thanks

Your GPA is indeed purty low, as is your DAT score. If this is a real post, you have a lot of work ahead of you to improve both of those. 🙂

I have schedule for another DAT test in 3 weeks. Im scared too, because my first DAT score were sent already. Dental School has become more competitive and Im not sure if I would get in.

I NEED A MIRACLE! 😕 :scared:

What are the 2005 Dental Stats?

I am assuming you want honest answers. Well...

The money you have already spent on applications is gone. I'm not sure you should even waste the money on secondaries if they are sent to you. Odds are pretty good that you will not get in anywhere with those scores.

Plan on nailing the DAT, ace the classes you are taking and now, and don't rule out the possibility of a post-bacc or master's program to boost your GPA. I know this is not what you wanted to hear, but it is my honest opinion.

Don't be discouraged, just realize that you are probably a couple years out from getting an acceptance to dental school. Doesn't mean you won't get in. There are guys at my school who applied 3 or 4 times before getting in. Stick with it, improve your scores and you will eventually get in. Best of luck.

I 2nd everything above. I appologize if I sounded a little harsh. The stats of those accepted are generally significantly higher than what you have right now.

I smell troll :meanie:

If true post: You have a long road ahead of you. The DAT score is well.......very...........

However it does reflect your GPA and therefore consistent at least. There are lots of honorable areas of dentistry that doesn't require as competitive numbers: RDH, Lab tech, and dental assistant all very necessary and important aspects of dentistry.

you haven't taken Ochem yet? take another year of full load classes and reapply next year. Make sure to work on DAT. don't get discouraged (i need to tell myself that too) just keep on trying. re apply with me next year. 😉

Everyone here has touched all the bases, I might inquire; however, what is your BCP and what were your complete DAT scores? If your BCP is good and you have some strengths on the DAT, you will at least have something to build on.

Unless you own the DAT on your retake, your chances this year are null. If you can pull 17's in all sections on the DAT, you could try Howard. Their scores are around yours.

More importantly, I would NOT retake the DAT right now. You will be spreading yourself thin in your other classes.

If it were me.... You are most likely not going to make it this year, so....
Focus on your current classes and get A's.
Take the summer off and study like hell for the DAT, taking it when you are ready.
Make sure that you take Kaplan. According the ADA, students who do not take a prep course between retakes (statistically speaking) do WORSE than they do on the first. (http://www.ada.org/prof/ed/testing/dat/dat_candidateinfo.pdf)

Good Luck,

You're getting all randy about teaching 17 yr. olds and I'm the one in poor taste?

Just kidding, I know.... Shame on me, just for that I probably won't get accepted anywhere.

Thanks to all of your reply. Its sad, but true... so life goes on!!!

I'll try to pull it this summer! Darn it, i've wasted alot of money........ and could of been a bio major :scared: 🙁

.. still keeping my prayers... *sigh* 🙁

I have a similar background. MIS major and doing a post bac. Your chances are slim to say the very least, but with hard work you can turn it around for next year.

I hate to give bad news to people, but dental school is becoming very competitive. It is not uncommon to come across a lot of applicants with 19+ DAT scores and 3.5 and up gpa's. It will be an uphill battle for you. If you don't get in this cycle don't dispair. I would take some more classes to boost your gpa and retake the DAT. Best of luck! 👍

Hi all. I am replying to the suggested alternate career areas : RDH, Lab Tech and Dental Assisting.

Actually, Dental Hygiene Programs are now very competitive to get into. Schools also have a limited number of students that they accept each year. They have they very own strict requirements such as Chemistry, Anatomy, Microbiology and so on. At my university, a competitive gpa was well over a 3.0 to start the program. In my class, there were a total of 40 students selected from a pool of 200+ applicants. They too, put out an alternate list every year.

It is definitely not a bad career to pursue. I have been a RDH for 2 yrs now, I have a Bachelors of Science in Dental Hygiene. My first job paid me $27 bucks an hour. I am now making $31. Office hours are gravy....so are perks such as paid vacations, personal days, paid uniforms and sometimes even bonus checks 🙂

Now, I want to persue a DDS/DMD degree.

That's great but you're like a male flight attendent or a male nurse...just ain't right 😀

PS. Do you shave your legs when you wear that skirt?

I am soooooo sorry to disappoint you.... But I am female!!!!! "Eddy" is a nickname!!

There are good male RDH's out there just like male RN's!!!!

Well, before browsing SDN I thought I was in decent shape with my stats:

Biochem major from UCB
3.5/3.4 OGPA/SGPA
20/20/21 AA/TS/PAT

Which still makes your scores a bit low. But, after seeing some of these peeps here on SDN and their scores I'm feeling far from confident. So, unless they are lying or just a rarity, my chances aren't so hot which in turn gives you a snowball's chance in hell. I applied to some pretty hardcore schools (UCLA, UCSF, USC, UoP, etc) so we might be both in the same boat. If I don't get in I will have to retake the DAT and take some extensions courses at Berkeley. I suggest the same for you.

So, if you don't get in, there will be others right with you. Just don't give up and keep trying!

For inspirational motivation, I reccomend the movie, "Rudy", with Sean Austin!

Seriously tho, that flick got me through finals more than once!

Pdizzle... you are in great shape. You will be competitive at those "hardcore" schools with an average GPA and great DAT (which is what those schools look for it seems). Beyond that, you should easily gain several acceptances if you applied to any safety schools.

At least you sent in your apps earlier than me. That alone makes you a better applicant.

If you like working with your hands, you should consider this. I'm not discouraging you or anything. One of the professors was telling us there will be a shortage of Lab tech's in the future. So I think it might just be a real good deal. I'm telling this to all of my friends with a BA degree.

Dental school is really getting competitive.

A lot of guys in my class at dental school scored above 31 on MCAT and still decided to pursue dentistry instead. Well, I didn't take MCAT but I'm sure that's pretty good.

All the dental jokes esp. from Seinfeld are now history, man.
