2. WSU Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine (Washington State University)
  • Pros: Close to home, newer MD program with growing reputation, small class sizes, more affordable in-state tuition.
  • Cons: Still establishing its national reputation, not much data on competitive specialty matches yet.

3. UMass Chan Medical School
  • Pros: Solid MD program with good reputation, decent match outcomes including competitive specialties, strong public health and research support.
  • Cons: OOS tuition is very high, cost of living in MA isn’t cheap either, and far from home. Would I be at a disadvantage as an out-of-stater for in-state resources or residency placement?

Please share your thoughts and thanks for the time you all

2 and 3 are both good choices, and it will depend on how close to home you would like to stay.

The schools have “specialty interest groups” that will help you meet attendings to arrange shadowing or research opportunities.

Any tips/advice on how to start networking early for the
I’d say three residency programs is the most you can realistically target during fourth year. Be realistic; if they’re competitive spots and you’re going to WSU you’re unlikely to get a spot at HMS.

Start talking to attendings in the specialty you’re interested. See where they went for residency. Hope they haven’t blown up any bridges and see if they can talk to someone about a fourth year rotation or even just shadowing or an informational interview.

Then look local. If you pick WSU then UW and OHSU might have better options. Call people up in the department you’re looking at. Check close to home and see if you can do research or set up shadowing or anything to demonstrate your interest.

The vice chair of our department would always ask me to find out why a visiting med student or resident was rotating through our program. What he really wanted to know was why he would want them as an attending or intern and if they were really interested in staying long term. A few of those people ended up in the program. Most of them had a family tie to the area.

Hey looking for some additional support or advice. I recently got into Ohio State University? I have family in Ohio on my dad's side. Any thoughts on this program?

Go to Ohio State! It's prestigious and highly regarded, both clinically and in research. Ohio State is a T-30 school, and definitely above UMass and leagues above Floyd. Congrats man!
