Hi!
I can't believe I am even in the position to choose between two great schools! I have applied in 4 different cycles, and only ever received rejections. I am just so excited!! It's all I can think about! With that said, I am seeking advice.

Would you choose WSU (4 years) or CSU vet-prep (5 years)?

Please let me know your thoughts!!!

I already touched on how I would choose WSU in another thread because it shorter and thus you reach your vet earning potential sooner, but a few other things came to kind reading this post.

Rankings don’t matter. Full stop. The rankings have more to do with funding and research than quality of graduates. You’re gonna be a great vet graduating from either school and last I checked they both have NAVLE pass rates that are fine.

Also, you shouldn’t feel rushed into the decision. You have until April 15 to choose. That’s nearly three months. They’ll hold your seat at both until then. I understand wanting to make a decision, and if you have decided, then by all means go ahead and commit, but you have no pressure to decide for three more months.

A lot of the cons seem mostly driven by your anxiety about change from how you’ve framed them here. Change is hard. But you can do it.There’ll be people at WSU also moving without support systems and you will make friends. Realistically, you’re gonna fly home two to three times a year max. You can’t just buy a seat on a commercial airline for a dog, so if the dog is too big for a carrier under the seat, then they might have to stay behind on breaks or you do drive. But by getting done sooner, you will earn 125k more in life than you would have by waiting, and that’s worth a few sacrifices in my mind.

Also, and I truly mean this kindly, maybe consider therapy to learn some stress management techniques if you don’t have a therapist already? They can teach skills that will help cope with the stress of vet school and stuff!

I just want to say I also moved quite far to attend WSU (~14 hour drive). Lots of my friends are OOS as well. It was really hard for me at first but it's getting better. If you do choose WSU, I'll be here if you ever want someone to talk to!

Also wanted to say I have my dog here with me and she's too large to fit under the seat on planes so I drove home for winter break. I only plan to go home twice a year and it's doable. There are also so many vet students who do pet-sitting here so that's always an option.

Moved coast to coast...more or less last minute having gotten pulled from waitlist in May. Had an offer from another school closer to home but it was collectively ~$80k difference in cost of attendance. Cost difference was more or less a no brainer and sincerely encourage you especially with loan situation being what it is now to go with more affordable option. It is hard being this far from family and friends (also like @gobears2022 where I can only go home 2x a year) but I try to also remember it is only 4 years. Can't speak to CSU and its program but the faculty and staff really care here at WSU; interactions are personal, you never feel like a number at the end of the day and they just want you to succeed to become best doctor that you can be following graduation.

If you have any questions/concerns or want to learn more about life in Pullman, WSU, etc. feel free to dm me! 🙂

I’m currently at CSU and love it here, but you do have an offer to directly start your DVM. I know quite a few of the current vet-preppers and from what I understand, it is primarily funded through a scholarship? I’m not sure if that applies to IS as well but that is what I’ve heard.

Ultimately the decision is up to you. Pick whatever is cheapest. Both schools are fantastic!

Thank you!! That is reassuring. I’ve been thinking a lot about it and I think I’m going to tour both, speak with a student loan financial advisor, and then decide! I’ve heard really good things about both schools so that’s comforting!! Thank you 💛🫶🏻

Yes! The program itself is mostly funded by scholarship (would spend about 8k), but I’m going to have to pay for a lot of my living expenses during that time too ): I will likely go to part time at my job if I go vet prep route and that would mean taking out more loans. However, it’s something I’m willing to do if that’s the best option for me. Idkkkk lol just have a lot of thinking to do!!

Thank you!! It’s so nice to hear somebody did the same thing and it worked out okay. I know that I will be fine, and I actually enjoy being alone. You’re right, it’s only for 4 years!

Omg thank you for your input about your dog and traveling. My drive would be ~30 hrs but honesty, I love driving so it really is doable.. it would just take a while 😂

Honestly the road trip back home with my dog was really fun lol. I listened to three audiobooks. Thankfully she loves car rides, or else I would be singing a different tune lmao
