Welcome everyone, to the class of 2010!! Its going to be awesome!!

My name is Brianna, and I'm from San Diego...

Can't wait to meet all of you!!

Benny from Los Angeles here. Nice to meet you!

Awesome! so cool that you're the first person I meet, and we are both from cali!

I have a few questions (since I just got accepted today, and I am majorly changing gears, as I had planned on going to WVSOM next week!!)

Where are you living??

Have you found good housing close by?

Also, do you know when the white coat ceremony is? My parents need to buy tickets soon (i am assuming all school's white coat ceremonies are around the same time of year)

THANKS!

Congrats to both of you! I also got the call a couple weeks back and will be joining you both in Morgantown in a little over a month. I also could use any info on housing as I am still trying to find a place to live. Look forward to meeting you soon!!

White coat ceremony isn't until our 2nd year.

Oh my gosh! Are you serious! I can't believe that!! the one at WVSOM was scheduled for 9/9.... oh well... I guess i will have to wait for that... i was really looking forward to that!

oh btw, congratulations to you too doc14! Can't wait to meet you! Where are you from?

as far as housing goes, I am not having much luck either, mostly because hardly any of the places have pictures to go with them, which is important since I am out here in california, and won't be able to see them beforehand...

but here is a link i have found useful anyway....

let me know if you find any thing better!

I am just wondering, since I haven't gotten any of the admissions packets in the mail yet, if there are any "summer reading assignments" or first week tests or anything of that nature that I should know about?

THANKS 😍

Congrats on your acceptance! I'm Brian from Maryland, and will be attending in the class of 2010 as well.

So far there has been no reading assignments, just info packets and some forms to fill out before class starts. On the admissions website you can retrieve the immunization forms which are due by August 11th. I am sure you will be receiving something soon from the office with all of the other forms.

As for housing, check the dominion posts classified ads. The website is: http://olive.dominionpost.com/classifieds/

hey brian! Thanks so much for the info!

Does anyone know what the parking situation is like there?
I mean, is it going to be unreasonable to not live within walking distance (i.e. spending 1/2 hour every morning looking for parking)?

So when is everyone arriving at school? I will be there by July 25, as I have to go early for a wedding, so if anyone is there, we should hang out!!

HAHA. I think we have the Cali mentality that there is traffic everywhere? Hell, with my LA POV, I feel that I need to live near school or else traffic will be unbearable.
But seriously though, I was wondering the same question.

You will get a parking pass for the large gravel lot just below the PRT stop, if you know where that is. I'm pretty sure there are spots there all day. Its a small walk from there to the school.

Hope this helps!

Traffic at the Evansdale campus (where the medical school is located) is not bad at all. Traffic heading towards the downtown campus can get bad during school days. It is nothing compared to traffic where you are at now I'm sure. So enjoy the small town!

Thanks for your insight, eng2med.

I got my packet today, so now i really feel 'official' which is cool!

I was just curious... what campus did you guys get assigned to for MS3 & MS4? I got charleston...

Hey guys!

I'm Josh, an OOS'er from Southwestern Virginia and got in June 20th (Charleston for M3/M4 years). I'll be living a stone's throw away from the hsc (I responded to one of the personal ad's beth ann gave in the info packet so I got real lucky).

I'll probably try to move in the majority of my stuff next weekend, but won't be there for good until August 10th. If some of you guys are already hanging out before orientation starts I'd like to meet some people early!

P.S. Who else is psyched about getting your laptop in the mail soon?

Anyone have any idea what textbooks we will be using during our first year?

I dont know this for sure, but these two text books seem to be pretty standard:

Grants Anatomy / Grants Dissector - for gross anatomy lab

Clinically Oriented Anatomy - anatomy text book...

I already have both of these books for a class I am taking right now, and they are pretty awesome.

As far as other books go, I bet the book store has a list of the ones we will need... But it might be helpful to talk to so MS II's to see which books the actually used, and if there were some they didn't use at all....

I was at WVU-som's book store this past weekend.

The MS1 booklist has not been compiled yet, it will be done when we get there for orientation or possibly sooner so says the cashier.

But if you get a hold of any M2's be sure and spread the wealth here.

Anyone know if there are any nationwide banks in Morgantown?

Hi everyone. I'm Mike from MA.

As far as I know, there aren't any truly national banks in Morgantown (i.e. ones that have branches in the Northeast or more specifically MA). I recently opened an account at Huntington Bank. They have branches in FL, IN, KY, MD, MI, NJ, OH, and WV. AND I got a free George Foreman Grill just for signing up!! So, as far as I'm concerned, they are the best bank around!

But if your not sold on Huntington, some other local banks include:

BB & T, Clear Mountain Bank, Centra Bank, Citizens Bank of Morgantown, Fairmont Federal Credit Union, First Exchange Bank, First Greene Service Corporation, The United Federal Credit Union, United Bank, WesBanco, WVU Employees' Federal Credit Union.

I found these banks here:

http://www.health.wvu.edu/employment/live/morgantown/banks.htm

That sucks... I love my Bank of America Student Checking, but I may have to switch over to BB&T...

On a very unacademic note, who here is a college football fan?
I went to UVA for undergrad and though I love my Wahoos, it'll be exciting to pull for team with high hopes (Go Mountaineers!)

As professional students we get priority in the lottery system for game tickets!

http://www.wvugame.com/

(and I've totally bought the DVD of last year's Sugar Bowl to familiarize myself with WVU football)

*I work in a law firm for the summer and I'm really bored*

Have any of you guys gotten a packet about orientation yet?

I haven't and I'm leaving on tuesday, and I have no new address yet, so I am thinking it may never reach me...

I got mine on Saturday. So, yours must be on the way.

One thing that you might be interested in knowing is that our parents are going to be invited to attend the "Oath Signing Ceremony" on Sunday August 20th.

When do we get our financial aid award (yay loans) packets?

Will those be one of the things we get at orientation?

As an out-of-stater I'm wondering if Stafford's will cover the cost of tuition this year or if I'll need to start taking out private loans right now...?

Anyone received a financial aid package yet? Don't we need the sheet to take out gradplus loans?

Haha, as I was typing this, flipanova asked the same question.

hey guys

i was just wondering about a financial aid packet as well.

the staffords plus the grad plus loan should cover the years tuition (at least of the Out of Staters that is)

I called the financial aid office this morning to check on the stafford loans, but their system is down until tomorrow... So you should probably call them tomorrow and see how much of the staffords you have been awarded...

hope that helps!
This financial aid stuff is so confusing... 😳

I wish that

a. I was still a resident of West Virginia (born in Huntington), lived there till I was 7
b. That I would have been accepted before March 1st

because...

I hope this helps someone? 😳

hey dont' worry about it! just join the military...they will take you any time! 😛

any way...
So i got an apt. today at the villa's... is any one else living there??

i'll be there starting july 26

Willow Lane Townhouses here (moving stuff in August 1st, will be there for good August 10th) 🙂

Anyone there?

Log into the STAR system to see the financial aid package.
For mine, the log on is first initial + last name
Password is the DAY of your birth (i.e. 19) + last four of your ID to make 6 digits.

Anyone pissed off about the laptop?? Ebay prices are only 1500!!

has any one else noticed the disparate number of guys to girls in the class? Not that im complaining... j/k! i just thought it was weird...

as far as the computer goes, thats too bad about the ebay prices, but mostly im just upset that i just GOT a brand new computer which is much nicer than the ones we have to get for school... 🙁

33 ladies out of 110 students .....ha ha ha .... woooooow.... sausage fest. ...........
where are the buns? ..... sigh .......

Whoa...

On a fun note, join the Group

WVU Medschool Class of 2010 on facebook if you have an account already!

Looks like a pretty diverse bunch of kids to me, I'm excited 😳

And I am pissed about the laptop too, I wish they could have at least opted for the model with Core Duo processor, but in any event it'll be more portable that my current Toshiba beast so I'm excited about that.

So.. what do people think? Do you need a car in WV? Say for groceries?
Your inputs are appreciated.

I would say yes to a car... morgantown doesn't really seem like so much of a "walking" city...
