Just wondering if anyone is familiar with the WVU program in Morgantown? Any thoughts of the quality of teaching/pt. diversity? Trying to figure out where to apply. Thanks in advance.

I received interviews at a number of fine programs: Duke, Emory, UNC, Penn, MUSC, UT-Southwestern to name a few. However, I was not extended an interview from WV. And yes, I applied. I heard they are very, very exclusive and regional (ie, only like West-Virginians), so best of luck!

I did a medicine/psychiatry residency at WVU-Mogantown from 1997 to 2002. Psychiatry there is a solid residency program. Dr. Stevenson has been chairman there for years. Good addiction training, headed by Dr. Rolly Sullivan. The program wasn't regional when I was there. Psychotherapy training for me was kind of spotty, but I think that the straight psychiatry residents got better training in psychotherapy than the combined residents. Training in psychotherapy is definitely available- not sure if Dr. Fidler and Dr. Diane Trumbell are still there, both were good at teaching psychodynamics.

On their website they show a number of residents who are definately not from west virginia.....maybe they just didn't extend an interview because they doubted that you would eventually wind up there...

hmm... maybe so but i met a guy at my duke interview who was from the pittsburgh area and didn't receive an interview there either. he was actually kind of upset! 😱

Hi, I'm a resident at WVU in Morgantown. In a nutshell, its a kick-butt program! A very "well-kept secret"....the quality of teaching is great and amount of psychopathology we see is tremendous as we draw from all over West Virginia, eastern Ohio, western Maryland, and southern Pennsylvania...send me a IM if you have more questions....I ended up picking this program over a number of "big name" programs...

Also, the program in not "exclusive" or "regional" at all....not in the least bit. Most of the residents are not from West Virginia. We have people from NY, Florida, California, Oklahoma, Texas, Chicago etc....Dr. Stevenson, Sullivan, Fidler, and Trumbull are all still there.

Hi there.....I will be applying for Psych residency at WVU...got an interview for the last match.....but dint got matched....now applying with more psych experience....I met Dr. Stevenson and I was impressed with him. I had a good conversation with him regarding research opportunities..but dint matched....being an IMG makes a little bit of difference......I am working as a clinical research co-ordinator at Mount Sinai Department of Psychiatry and will be back this year.....with more psych research and hopefully publications...

Chianti....I would like to talk to you in this regard...as all the residents are very friendly and I ranked your program #1 on my list....
