I'm a student in a radiologic technology program and I'm considering going to med school. I thoroughly enjoy what I do now just b/c I LOVE helping others, but I really feel like I can do more to help people. In spring I'll graduate w/ an Associates in Applied Science and then I can transfer and do like 2 more semesters to get a Bachelor's of Science in Radiologic Technology.

I've heard it's kinda looked down upon to go to a CC, but do you think it would be okay considering RTs primarily receive certification through CCs? The only pre-med class I've taken at a CC is BIO 101 and I plan to take the rest of them at a four year institution.

My GPA right now is about a 3.7+. I know it's a CC but as far as Allied Health Programs go it's been ranked 9th in the nation and I'm top of my class. Furthermore, the x-ray program is probably the best in the state.

Should I get a BSRT or just start over as a biology major which would take an additional 2 years for me? I've heard unusual degrees sometimes have a better chance than your standard Bio or Chem degree and I don't think too many x-ray techs are going pre-med.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I think it looks great. It's awesome experience and unique, healthcare-relevant thing to put on your resume.

I don't think you should start over -- definitely finish what you've started and then pick up whatever more you need from university before you apply to med.

Unusual degrees do sometimes have a better chance. Stick with it!

I agree with this.

Some schools frown on CC credits and some don't. Be sure you know which is which, by calling admissions or reading the websites, before wasting your application dollars.

If possible take the pre-reqs while you are working on your bachelors. Prereqs are gen. chem 1 & 2 with labs. Organic chem 1 & 2 w. labs. Physics 1 & 2 w. labs and Biology 1 & 2 with labs. Good luck.
