Hi SDNers,

I'm looking into obtaining a x-ray course, but it costs a lot ~$600 including film/book/XCP kit set (ROP is not an option for now). I mean having a x-ray license really indicates that you're serious about the DS and look great on your application, but I feel like I can spend that $$ on DAT prep materials.

What do you think?

Thanks,

Honestly, I really don't think this is necessary. There are many other things that can help your application without spending any extra money.

sounds like an absolutely ridiculous idea unless u are assisting and ur dentist requested it..i highly doubt it would benefit ur app at all. yes, doing better on the dat via more prep material would be much more beneficial. or use those hours at work it would have taken for u earn 600 and volunteer with that time. or offer the 600 to a prof and see if he will raise one of ur grades.....haha

please dont get ur xray license just for the sake of putting it on your application.

Thanks for the reply. Well it's not just because I want it on the application, but more because the dentist I'm shadowing for has suggested the idea.

Also, two free dental clinics that I volunteer have suggested that I should obtain a x-ray license so I can be more useful there.

Well, I thought it sounded kinda crazy spending that much money and I needed 3 person's opinion on this.

Thanks a lot

You could ask the place u volunteer if they have a way for u to get a licensing paid for or if they could assist in any way..i realzie u shouldnt cost them money as a volunteer but it shouldnt cost u a lot of money to volunteer either. again, i really just dont think it would be worth it.

save it for your appications.. you'll need it! 😉

Yeah, I thought the class was great, but I took it at the same time as my assisting class. If you've got to pay for it, I'd say hold off. That's a bit much, and since it sounds like you've already done extensive dental assisting volunteering, the radiography wouldn't add all too much to your application.

I looked into a class today and it was only $125.....which i think is high.....
I actually have a question regarding this......I took my clinical xray cert test last year and passed it.....just have to take the written......i have the book and 5000 hours of assisting experience already.....i dont want to take a class if i dont have to.(going to take 8 weeks)...i need to get certified quickly so that I can start working again..........does anyone have the course material for test prep? Or a way to get a hold of it?

you can go on the web...search for your states ADA.....it should give you a list of places that offer the course...
its 12 hours of class usually......only taught 1X per week......that is simply too long for me.....i can probably take the exam now...just want to be sure i have the proper study material....don't want to pay $100 for the exam and not pass it
