for real...where are you going to med school? I am not sure, but some of the NYC schools I got into didn't have my Latinos enrolled. shame 👎 👎 . but I am sure you will find some people in the near by communities, particularly near Columbia Med....

I'm another latina registered in this forum. I was born and raised in the U.S. (Miami, FL). Both of my parents are Cuban. I went to UMiami undergrad and am about to start my 4th year of medical school at UMiami medical school. Hopefully, I will stay at Jackson Memorial Hospital for OB/GYN residency. What can I say? I love Miami and being around my latin peeps! 😀

WaitCommiserate:

Akanene: You will love NYC - you'll get a taste of Latinos Carribean-style!

Macaddict78: Yay - mixed breeds of the world unite! what languages do you speak? And does the 78 refer to your birth year? In that case, people in their late-20's unite too! (I'm 27)

Good to see all of my people here! Akanene, where did you go in South America? If you didn't visit Machu Picchu, your trip was incomplete my friend.....just my opinion 🙂

Wow Macaddict! You're quite the mix!! I have a friend who is as diverse as you. Her mom is Mexican and Korean and her dad is Danish and Black....

Cuban salsa is really popular in Peru. I have a bunch of friends who love to dance Guaguanco and one where they dance like old folks?? something like that. It's cool to watch too. You dance a lot in Miami when you have time? That's probably a dumb question to ask a Cuban woman huh?

Hello I am full blood Mexican-American and live in Texas. Currently in the process of applying to medical school. Anyone know schools that show love to Mexican-American applicants?
Currently, will be applying to all Texas schools, plus Mayo, Creighton, University of Washington (Seattle), Oregon Health Science, and looking to apply to about two or three more.

if you have a strong research background and/or interest, apply to Stanford Med

I would also add UCLA Geffen, Drew/UCLA....they graduate the largest number of Latino MDs...if I wasn't going to Stanford, I would have gone to UCLA Geffen!

Actually, I would take out UW-Seattle and Mayo .....unless you want to be the only Latino in your class...also, UW-Seattle is ungodly competitive for out-of-staters....

Glad to see this thread, and more excited to see where its going...
So why would previous Latino threads die out?...

I am half Cuban - and the first in my family to finish high school, much less make a goal for medical school. So this means that I suffer for the loss of mentors. I dont know about you other Pre MDs but Ive found it so hard to find an adult that can be a guide or advisor for me so far. I can count them on one hand and Im in my thirties!...

Also, I havent found other non traditional latino students who are as ambitious or with similar goals. I would love to meet up with other ambitious, med focused latinos on Long Island, (and elsewhere eventually) at least to practice the language, and for peer/ advising support. Could this be the forum where Latinos can unite and form a stronger base of friendship and bonding? There are so few of us in or vying for this profession! Yet half the population will speak Spanish in 20 years? I hope this thread does not again extinguish.

startingline3: i think UW-Seattle is actually a good choice. they are doing an intensive recruiting effort to bring in students of color, and i think virtually all the out-of-staters who are accepted are latino or african american. like Gabi_MD said though, the vast majority of its students are white. i mean really white.

cubashem: my family has a similar educational background and i totally agree with the lack of role models/advisors for latinos. i think we will have such a big responsibility as physicians to fill that gap for younger generations. it's intimidating but really exciting. 👍

I attended the SMEP program at the University of Washington; I really liked the school and found the people extremely friendly. I understand that it is extremely difficult to get into, but I just want to give it a try because it is a school outside of Texas that I would really consider attending because I want to do family medicine.

I used to dance alot Salsa during my second year of medical school. It's fun and relaxing not to mention a good workout. However, I haven't danced at all since the start of thrid year. 🙁 There was just no time. Maybe I'll start up again this year. 🙂

Contact me if you need good mentoring. I'd love to help you or any other Latinos out. Stanford does have a large number of non-traditional students!

I'm surprised this thread has hung around this long too, which is pretty sad. But it's great that it has. I think it's cool that some of the people here are mixed. But especially for the Caribbean people, I think we are in such a great position to bridge gaps between cultures, even if it's just in our own lives. I hope we all recognize our African, Indian, and whatever other ancestries we have, cuz I feel that gets lost in so many of us.

Anyway, I'm Dominican, born and raised in NY. Karina, it's nice for me to hear of somebody like you out here, doing your thing. That's good stuff. AECOM has been my #1 so far, since I'm from the Bronx. Their student-run free clinic is 3 blocks from where I grew up, so it's all sentimental and stuff for me 😍. I'm applying for 2006 though. Good luck getting in, cuz I'll take you up on some lessons, I'm kinda rusty on my turns. 😳

Consider UIC in IL as well. They have the largest med school class in the country and they are pretty damn diverse. Financial aid packet is good too.

You wanna do your internship in Lima or in another city? I know that at the University in Trujillo and its affiliated hospital they let students interact with patients a lot more than they do in Lima. Most U.S. schools only have connections with schools in Lima like Cayetano Heredia :/

How was the salsa congress?? I live in MN and they had a salsa competition here at one of the bigger salsa clubs (Yes, there are Latinos in cold ass MN) and I won a trip to Puerto Rico! But I don't know when I'd have time to go....however I bet the salsa congress in LA was great! 🙂

There are quite a number of Dominicans here in MN. I'm telling you all, St. Paul, the capitol of MN will be all Hispanic in 30-50 years!

helllo all!

I'm Latino born and raised in NYC with my parents being from Ecudaor, South America. I'm staying in NYC for med. school with my top choices being AECOM (waitlisted; I know how you feel Karina), Downstate (accepted) and Cornell (waitlisted)...........I also got into Stony Brook and Albany, but I don't see myself in either of those places.

Espero que les vayan bien en todos sus estudios y que realizen todas sus metas. Que vivan los latinos!!

I love this forum. Everyone is so nice!! I can feel the love radiating from my computer. Latinos are the best!! 😀

I lived in santiago de chile for about 9 months and then i was in cusco, peru for about 2, so i was real close to machu picchu for awhile 🙂... i actually did the 4 day hike on the inca trail to get to machu picchu which was one of the most amazing experiences of my life... my plan if i dont get into med school is to move back down to cusco or somewhere in brazil (where i was born) bc i just love it so much down there.

Damn!! I gotta give you props for the Inca trail hike. I wanted to do it but didn't have the time (and probably wouldn't have had the energy 🙂 ) while I was in Cusco. What other things did you see while you were in Cusco? I could go on and on about Cusco. It is a great place. Brazil is actually a place I would really like to visit as well. There is a lot of Brazilian influence nowadays in Peru, especially in popular music.

Is that ok with yall.

Quiero tomar la clase "medical spanish" antes de asisto (asistir but I forgot how to conjugate) medical school (class of 2010 hopefully).

Felizmente, yo pude lograr admision a tres programas DO, inclusive una beca a DMU.

:luck: 😍

I was in cusco for almost 2 months, volunteering at a clinica/hogar for children with physical and mental disabilities... it was such an amazing experience and it really is one of my favorite cities anywhere. it can be kinda touristy, but i actually became really close with a lot of peruvians (and the bar they all worked at was for sure "mi segunda casa"... did you ever go to mythology??) and was dating a guy that couldnt even speak english so i really got to break out of that. man, this thread is really making me miss south america right now... hopefully new york will have some latin influence to offer.. my friend wants to go salsa dancing tonight, but i know it just wont be the same 😳

Well, I really liked AECOM when I went there. My aunt lives in the Bronx...a few minutes from the school by car. She is crossing her fingers I get in, and planning to bring me dominican food to my apartment if I get tired of the kosher stuff from the cafeteria...God! A Little mangu or sancocho just does the trick sometimes! and "A student needs to be well-nourished!" Dominican moms are just too cute! 😉

Anyways, I called and asked about my status on the waitlist. Dean Kerrigan said my file will probably be looked at by the end of this month if not the beginning of the next. I'm not too optimistic...hence I already got a place in Davie, Fl and plan to stay with the Osteopathic program...oh well...We'll see

Good luck to ya!
Karina

Born and raised in the Dominican Republic. Moved to Boston at age 9 (1991). Went to Brown for undergrad and I'm headed to Case Western (Cleveland, OH) for medical school in August. Throughout the process, I saw very few Latinos in med school =( and even fewer Dominicans (I met ONE Dominican enrolled in med school).

Anyone else share my love for bachata? 😉

I'm with ya all the way....except for the bachata part! (Maybe Aventura here and there...). I'm sorry, but I'm just not into it 🙁
And I know exactly what you mean. I never felt like a minority before, I gre up in the DR and then moved to Miami...But going on interviews, NJMS and AECOM...I would be the only Hispanic person there. It was just kind of weird. One thing that I like, though is the response I get from people when I tell them where I'm from. A lot of ppl have either visited or want to visit...and it's like a magnet, they just want to know stuff and ask questions...it's cool..I love being Dominican! 😛

And btw GO RED SOX! 😀
