I am Latina and MS1 (ten more days!) at Mayo. There are many Latinos here so to whomever posted about scratching Mayo no way! Mi padre es de Mexico y mi madre de Madrid..soy doble Latina je je. Mucha suerte a todos y todas!
Hey congrats on Mayo!! You would have been 45 minutes away from me (currently I live in Minneapolis) but since I will likely be goin to IL for med school, I guess you can add another 8 hours to that number in the fall. Suerte con todo senorita!!

I was in cusco for almost 2 months, volunteering at a clinica/hogar for children with physical and mental disabilities... it was such an amazing experience and it really is one of my favorite cities anywhere. it can be kinda touristy, but i actually became really close with a lot of peruvians (and the bar they all worked at was for sure "mi segunda casa"... did you ever go to mythology??) and was dating a guy that couldnt even speak english so i really got to break out of that. man, this thread is really making me miss south america right now... hopefully new york will have some latin influence to offer.. my friend wants to go salsa dancing tonight, but i know it just wont be the same 😳
For some reason I thought you were a guy....did you date a Spanish-speaker or Quechua-speaker in Cusco? No I never heard of mythology....I went to the main "touristy" sites like Koricancha, Ollantaytambo, Sacsayhuaman....and it was awesome!!! I went with my family so I didn't have the chance to go out on my own and check out the local places to party. My average night would be strolling around the main plaza at night sipping on mate de coca while seeing graffiti artists making/selling art. Mi Peru es tan lindo! Now I miss Peru too 🙂

I am asian, lived 9 years in Spain. The Canary Islands.
Anybody from Spain???

Oh I see. Well I don't know if you like big cities or not, but I hear Rochester is a decent city. But most likely for fun, you'll be coming up to Mpls in your free time. Check out First Avenue in downtown mpls on Thursdays (if you ever have time). It's salsa/merengue/bachata/cumbia/reggeaton night. First Ave is where Prince shot a part of his movie Purple Rain....thought I'd share that for some odd reason.... 🙂

its so exciting to see how many latino physicians the future holds - god knows our communities need us!

as for the salsa, merengue, and other dancing - i think i may be the only latina on this thread with two left feet. yo se, que lastima! anyone in LA wanna volunteer to be my dancing instructor this fall???

¡Estamos aqui!

Heyah. Chicano/Spanish/Sefardi mix from the West Coast (yes, all over). Now in Philly.

There are like 3 other Hispanos among my class of 230+. We could use some more; so Latinos y Hispanos, come to Jefferson!

Hey everyone!

I don't know why I haven't posted here before but I've enjoyed reading the postings. I was born here but my parents are from Mexico and my father is actually still a Mexican citizen.

Salsero: Do you go to school in Minneapolis? I live in Cali now but I went to college in MN so I remember hanging out at First Ave. Minneapolis/St. Paul is a great place! Lots of good memories.

Gaby: I hope you consider volunteering at the free clinics once you get to Stanford Med. We definitely need people to help out and it's an amazing experience. PM if you are interested in finding out more.

I'm excited to know others going through this whole crazy application with me. As a non-trad I'm not close to anyone applying this year and it's nice to hear how others are holding up! 😍

¡¡¡Hola amigos!!!
Me encanta latinoamérica. Cambié mi major de Biology/Chemistry a uno de Filosofía/Literatura en Español (una de las mejores decisiones de mi vida). Soy una tejana nacida en francia de corazón latino!

Nos conocemos. 😉

Add another Hispanic to your list.

Another Latino here! mi mama y apa son tapatíos y yo nací en LA. Will be attending UCLA this fall! Yay! Good luck to everyone starting med school and those who will be applying this year 🙂

I'm half mexican so I have a little latino in me

Latinos where you from and where are you pursuing your medical careers....Me, originally from Lima, Peru but lived in NY, AR, MO (for undergrad) and MN. Went to Wash U for undergrad and am livin in MN right now. Goin to UIC most likely. 😴 😴 Ok everyone else's turn......
Hey thanks for starting the thread. I'm from SF Bay Area and both my parents are Colombianos. Currently I'm on a few waitlists and if anyone else is going through the same thing I am then you must know that this limbo of a fate is driving me nuts. Hopefully something good will hapen soon- it would really suck to be reapplying again.

I have to agree completely with you Mr. Plum. Latinas were put on this earth to signify class and subtle sex appeal which drives men like me crazy!!! Latinas are the most beautiful women in the world in my opinion and I think Mrs. Universe (or maybe it was Mrs. World) 2005 proves it....go Miss Peru!!!

I went to Carleton.

First Ave is crazy. I remember I went there once to dance Salsa and got two marriage proposals. I don't know what was up with those guys because I'm certainly not one to inspire men to propose marriage! But it was fun nonetheless.

i'm another halfie 👍
dad's American and my mom's Argentine, spanish was my first language and yes, i do have the beautiful argentine accent mixed with a little bit of a gringo (something like- sho me shamo wendy 🙂 )
have you guys done any medical translating?

i've always found it kind of hard to understand spanish from the islands or central america, it's always been so interesting to me how spanish is so different everywhere you go!
good luck to everyone!! i'm hoping being bilingual and multicultural will help me out in this process and i wish the same for all of you.

I hope it wasn't me proposing to you....hehe jk. Yeah 1st Ave is a crazy sin-ridden place. No it's not so bad. At first I thought it was kinda like a dungeon but I got used to it and plus they have a great big floor which helps when you dance. Minneapolis is a nice city. I will miss it if I leave....Carleton had a salsa dance thing once. I went but it kinda sucked. Oh well.. 🙂

All I know of Argentine spanish is that they use "che" to refer to each other and use a "sh" sound for Y's. Example, you guys say "Oshe" instead of "oye." It's cool in a different kinda way

That's the social life at Carleton summed up: it kinda sucked. That's ok, I was happy there.

Everyone abandoned the thread!!! Back to square one....vamos 'pe!! Escriban algo. I'll try to start a topic to discuss. Does everyone feel like they have a definite advantage in medicine if they are bilingual? You think you'd be a more "useful" doctor? I do....

Que pasa hermanos!

I live in Michigan, going to U of M Flint next fall. Mi madre es de Puerto Rico, my dad is Indo/Pakistani & Austrian. Anyway I would love to go to U of M med school, but in 5 years, acceptance to anywhere would be lovely. Diviertanse!

Yes, being bilingual is a huge advantage. I am not even bilingual, I have to learn Spanish in school, but I wish my mother would have taught me when I was young.
