So, for anyone who knows, how much will I need to pay for a Yale hospital cafeteria meal plan to use for ten weeks? Are these cafeterias all-you-can-eat, or will I have to pay extra to eat more? What kinds of food do they have, real food or just snack-types? Please give me some info on these issues. Also, can anyone tell me about Harkness Hall? Just wondering. Thanks.

Hi, so I'll be doing a research internship at Yale med school this summer. I'm just trying to do some budgeting. So, for anyone who knows, how much will I need to pay for a hospital cafeteria debit card to use for ten weeks? Are these cafeterias all-you-can-eat, or will I have to pay extra to eat more? This is just from interview day, so I'm no expert. But they do have real food, I had a grilled chicken sandwich and there were a few other stations with at least decently healthy food. The price seemed reasonable I think. It's not all you can eat, though, it's a la carte.

First, do you mean Yale-New Haven or Harkness Hall? Either way, they're both similarly priced, though I don't remember details. The cafeteria in Harkness is called Marigold's, and its daily menu (but no prices) can be found here.

Second, you should just go to the carts waiting on the corner of Cedar and York. Those things have really tasty and affordable food, IMHO.

I am talking about the hospital cafeterias, not the dorm one.

In that case, I would still strongly recommend the adjacent carts (there are typically hispanic, chinese, and thai carts). Otherwise, if memory serves me right, the hospital cafeteria is approximately the same price range as Marigold's with less daily variation in food options. And as another poster mentioned, the hospital cafeteria is also a la carte.

carts all the way....5 bucks will stuff you in one meal or split it into 2 meals! they are so delicious too. i think the hospital food is pretty bad there, and a bit expensive.

Thanks for all the replies. I have a very strict and specific diet, and from what I can derive here, it seems that it would be better for me just to buy my own groceries rather than depend on the hospital cafeteria and pay a ton of money for their food. Does this sound right to you all?

i'm not sure how much you eat, but i've eaten at the hosptial cafeteria a few times (visiting a friend), and each time it cost me between $8 and 9 per meal. i didn't eat any more that day than i usually do, and my BMI classifies me as underweight/normal so it's not like i gorge myself all the time. so if you can manage it, try to do your own grocery shopping. it's way cheaper; hopefully if you have an internship you will have some free time to do it.

with a yale discount, the meals are $4-6 at the hospital cafeteria, $3.50 - $5 at the carts and $5-7 at harkness. you should be able to get the discount even if you get the temp id card.
who are you working with? if youre doing biostep, i think the meals at the hospital cafeteria are included.

anyway, be all this as it may, by far the cheapest way to eat is still to buy and make your own food.

let me know if you have any other questions about yale.
