Did all of you write 500 words worth of useful information on why you want to go to Yale... or did you just share your thoughts indifferent to length? I mean i know "better to be short and sweet then long and boring" and yadda yadda... but I just wanted to get an idea of what others were doing.

I'm assuming they picked 500 words for a reason....

Mine was 494 words.

I don't mean you need to write the full 500 words; that's a maximum length afterall. If you can say what you need to in less, then that's fine too. I actually had difficulty getting mine down to 500 words, but maybe it's just me.

mine was actually about 400 words. i really tried to be "unique" and not say a bunch of trite, bland crap. doubt it worked, though....

You definitely wouldn't want go over the Yale imposed limit. Actually, I don't even think it will let you. On the other hand, we're going to be spending four years there and it will impact our entire careers, so we should be able to explain our reasoning with at least 400 words.

i thought the online app had a built-in word limit/check thingy.

but even if it doesn't, you don't want to bore someone with a novel. i don't care if you're going to be spending 20 years there and would marry the school if it was legally possible.

Just say, "I heard it's a good school to go to."

Short and sweet, and it'll get you an interview at least. 👍
