I'm headed up to Yale in a few weeks, and I'm curious if you guys know of a rental car company that will rent to under-25 for a relatively affordable price. I'm looking at CT limo, but 1) I've seen some horror stories from others on the board, and 2) I don't know if I'd like/need a car to get around New Haven, especially if I'm up there for an extra day or two.

I also have the option of hanging around NYC for a day or two with a friend living up there, doing touristy stuff and catching a show. In that case, would it be cheaper/easier to rent a car? Or are cabs a better way to go?

Thanks!

no, i had a good time with them. they were relatively on time (+/- 5 mins) you should make reservations online tho. it's hella lot cheaper i think. it was 47 on the way there cuz i paid on the spot and then 25 back from phelps gate after my student host made the reservation for me. (i think the yale discount only applies to e tickets purchased through yale servers? *shrug* i have no idea how computers work, haha)

I use CT LIMO all the time - They are always on time - WHy do you want to bother renting a car and drive in the hell of 95 north? 😕

Haha, I had no idea about the 95...grown up in the South my whole life.

So kirexhana, do you recommend reserving the inbound trip only, and then reserving the outbound while I'm there?

Whatever you do, DON'T TAKE A CAB! It will be ridiculously expensive.

Renting a car is actually not a bad option (besides, you can drive on the Merritt/Hutchinson River Parkway, which is faster and prettier than I-95). If you can get a car for less than $60 all told (try Priceline), it's a better deal, and MUCH faster and more convenient than CT Limo.

If you will be in NYC anyway, the best option in my opinion is the Metro-North commuter train from Grand Central (42nd St) or Harlem (125 St) that takes you to Union Station in New Haven. Train fare is $28-$36 roundtrip depending on time of day, and the trip takes 94-108 minutes, depending on stops scheduled. From Union Station, it is a $5-6 cab ride to the med school.
