I am taking a light research year after 3rd year. I will be taking step 2ck as well before I take the year off.

So I have some dumb questions.

Can I still get the LORs uploaded to eras by September; or this works only if you are going through the application process this year? (That way I have the LORs ready for the following year?)
Do the LORs have an "expiration" date? I was hoping to gather all my LORs this year - but where would I tell my letter writers to upload them?

I am just confused as to how this works when you are planning to take a year off.
What do you have to make sure with regards to your application before you take the year off?
Any help is appreciated!

I graduated from med school a few years ago, so things may have changed. However, I took a year off after 3rd year and eras applications didn't roll over year after year.

If there is someone you want to write you a letter from 3rd year then just let them know so that they can write it. Then, when it's time to apply you can let them know and can it is ready to go to be submitted.

This was an email we got back in May:
If you applied to any programs during the 2018 season, then your application is already certified and submitted and you do not need to take any further action. You can also verify if your application is certified and submitted by checking the Application Submitted Date in the Dashboard of the MyERAS application.

You will be able to view and download the following documents in the History section of MyERAS:
  • MyERAS Application (Personal Information, Biographic Information, Education, Experience, Licensure, Publications)
  • MyERAS CV
  • Program Report
  • Payment History
  • Personal Statements
  • Letters of Recommendation (LoRs)
Upon registering your MyERAS 2019 token, you will be prompted by the system to import your most recently certified and submitted MyERAS application data, if you choose to do so. Similarly, you may also select associated LoRs to import. If you wish to import application data or letters at a later time, you can do that from the History tab. You may edit your MyERAS application information after it is imported for the new season.

Thanks to both of you!

So similarly to amcas applications, we apply to one program to get certified. Another dumb question - does this mean I will still go through the match during my year off? When I reimport the data the following year will PDs think I failed to match?

It seems like you can still certify if you didn’t apply to programs as that would be that you could verify at the point this email is sent out. I’m going to have to figure this out too, I’ll get back with you when I have a definitive answer

For residency, the match (NRMP or NMS) and application process (ERAS) are two separate entities. You have to register for the matches separate from the application service. There is some overlap and collaboration for things, but they are still separate. You could always use ERAS and simply not register for the matches.

I have no idea if this is the best option for you. See what samac says about the applying vs. verification thing for that answer.

Ya know what’s really fun?
When your school won’t respond to your emails about this specific question.
:boom:

So... I need to make another account other than ERAS?

Yep, you will also register for NMS (for the AOA Match) and/or NRMP (for the ACGME Match). You don’t have to do either of those immediately- I think the deadlines were November-ish.

Jeez, they never tell us anything -,-

Yeah, expect no instruction from your school. You need to come at this as if its all on you, because the advice they give is non-existent, incomplete, incorrect, or simply not in your best interest. This is one of most important processes of your career. Know it (i.e. the residency and match process) inside out.

So many people at my school had no idea how the match process worked, and they ending up having to rush and paying late fees for registering for the match near the end of the cycle. I believe you have until Nov to register for one of the matches and I think the other is in Dec, but I just made Nov my deadline for both. I think it costs more if you try to register after that. For some reason, DO schools forget to even mention it to us half the time. I only knew from spending way too much time on this website in med school and from digging through the NRMP website.

At least OP will only have to worry about 1 match.

I am actually having anxiety about taking a gap year now( With the merger and everything). Anyone care to share any success stories of average DO students successfully matching after a gap year?

Yes. I took 2 years off after 3rd year and matched. Had a lot of interviews.

As I've been researching for places to apply this cycle,
I saw one (could be more but I definitely saw one) program that specifically said letters must be from within last 6 months.
I don't think I applied to that programs (forgot which one now) and i don't specifically remember others mentioning that requirement.

Thanks to both of you!

Does anyone have updated info on this --My initial question was whether the LORs roll over to the next season if I do not go through the current match and if do not certify the application? Do I need to apply to atleast one program to certify - and does this certifying make me a repeat applicant?? (I contacted myeras and they said "you may need to certify" - no definitive answer SMH  )

I just emailed them.
They told me I had to certify and submit my application to be able to roll over the LORs.

“Thank you for your email. There are certain required fields to certify and submit the application, however certifying and submitting does not require applying to programs.

Please let me know if I have answered all your questions to your satisfaction or if I can provide any further assistance.”

I followed up with if it would qualify me as a reapplicant.
She stated that there was no way to be designated as a reapplicant. Hope that helps.
