I read through a few dozen IA threads, but none really answered the following:

-HOW do schools find out about IAs? Is it just through AMCAS? If so, how does AMCAS find out?

-I was in a friend's dorm room freshman yr, and a few people were drinking (me not included). RAs came in, and I got "cited" (or whatever RAs do) because I was in the room where there was alcohol, and they had no way to tell who was drinking and who wasn't. As a consequence, I just had to write a short essay with the other people in the room about how drinking is bad, or something like that. We turned it in to the hall director, and that was it.

As far as I know, this was handled completely at the dorm-level. This sort of incidence probably happened 100 times a night at the university, so I find it hard to believe they put it in everyone's record. It was such a minor deal, I forgot about until I ready another thread.

Would you think this is an IA, or no? Should I report it?

Call campus life or whatever your school calls it an ask. I asked the dean if we even had "IA records" and he responded with only the people that get caught cheating have a note in the transcripit. So don't worry now 21 year old crack a top and let the adult beverages flow

Would you actually check with campus life or something "bigger" like the registrar, who keeps record of IAs? I'm sure campus life keeps record of any minor dorm-related issue, but I doubt any school will go checking with res life to dig these things up...they probably don't care that a complaint was launched against Timmy 4 years ago for playing his music too loudly.

I say campus life because that's is where our dean of acadimic affairs is located. Sorry for not being clear, talk to someone that deals with acadmeic affairs

Oh, okay.

Any thoughts on the first question? Do people find out about IAs because they usually show up on transcripts?

Ours do, unless it's like the honor system because who is going to check every little detail to find out about IA's unless they are clearly listed on ones transcripit.

I keep reading that you're supposed to indicate things even if they are not on your "record". So am I supposed to cop to this even if there is no record of it with the registrar/dean/whatever?

This seems extremely silly.

While I'm at it, why not confess to the piece of candy I ate out of the grocery store bulk bin when I was 4?

my school requires an evaluation form filled out by the dean of students, or whoever keeps track of records

Hm. Did you send this in with your transcripts?

Did your school take action against you? JMO, but if this was something handled at the housing level and never forwarded to your school, there was no institutional action (action taken by your school).

A school will discover an IA if it is on your transcript or if they require you to submit a dean's evaluation/letter prior to matriculation (not sure how many schools require this).

There's a good chance a record exists somewhere. I would contact ResLife or a student affairs representative or whoever houses the record and ask them whether or not they consider the incident to be an "institutional action". That should answer the question of whether or not you need to report it.

Just called the Dean of Students...I'm all clean. They also said nothing from the dorms, unless it was a code of conduct violation and involved the dean, would be in any record.

Thanks for the input, everyone.
