Youngest person to get into Dental school?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I know there's someone who started their D1 year at 16 last year.

From looking at the incoming class stats from various schools, it seems like the typical age for those accepted is about 24. Do the folks in admissions try to avoid accepting applicants who are, say, under 22? I ask just because I'll be graduating early and a little on the young side when I interview.

I think there are many factors far greater in importance than age. If you show maturity in PS + interview, have all the grades + ECs + great LOEs, being 20 (or whatever) shouldn't hold you down.

I agree. It only seems logical. 🙂

We have had multiple people at our school who were 19 when they entered dental school. As someone stated, there are multiple factors that weigh in on the decision - not just age. Probably the biggest reason why you don't hear of the Doogie Howsers (16 yo) in dental school is because when they are that intelligent as kids, their parents would rather their kids go to medical school as dentistry is not given the respect that medicine is. Most people do not realize that dental school is pretty much medical school with a built in residency for oral health that is taught at the same time you learn the basic science and medical stuff. So, they would rather steer their kids into medicine which give their kids more respect and a higher earning potential.

One of my friends is entering at 18, that's the youngest I know of~

In UoP's 2+3 program, he'll get out of DS just after turning 21 I think 😛

My DS class had a guy 19 when we started. He started college at age 16. He did just fine. After a couple of years in private practice he returned to school. He now has a PhD (maybe its two PhD's) to add to his DMD and is teaching in a highly regarded dental school.

I was a year younger than this. Honestly, no one even questioned or realized my age. You can accomplish a lot in a short period of time, or nothing in a long period of time. Age is irrelevant if the student is mature.
