type a- meticulous, easily stressed out, study til the last second
type b- laid back, need certain motivational tools to help you out

Sounds a tad bipolar to me. At least I know my personality type (type A) and I can admit the fact that I'm ambitious enough to want to do well on exams.

Does that make me competitive? Yes, because I honestly do give a damn about how well I perform on an exam. But do I have to seek validation and is my self-worth determined by whether I beat my peers on the exam? No. Do I care about the class average on an exam, or how my friends did? Not really. Does it matter to me that I give it my all and try my hardest? You bet your ass it does.

Anyway, being "competitive" and being "ambitious" are often regarded as the same thing, but there is a significant difference if you give them each a precise meaning. That distinction should have been made in this poll.

I am Type A / ambitious.

Haha yeah, I'm like this too (the MCAT is the exception) ... I can be quite competitive though ...

Me too, and I also studied for the MCAT at the last minute- bad idea!

i'm type A in the sense that i compete with myself. i honestly don't care how other people do on their tests and i actively avoid talking about scores/exams, etc with other folks.

is there a such thing as type-A loner?

I'm the opposite. I'm easily type A, as I cant help getting stressed out, especially when something doesnt go my way. I'm always anxious about the future, my grades, how I might do on the MCAT next year, etc. I really need to chill, but unfortunately its just the way I am. I am also pretty competitive, but not like others. I like to know what other people scored so I can compare myself, but I dont go around bragging about a grade or begging other people to tell me theres.

Hi there,
I am competitive but I never studied until the last minute. I was an everyday studier (and still read every day) but I always got a good night's sleep before exams. I also avoided being on campus until just before the test because I hated the last minute questioners and studiers who would quiz each other while standing in line to be seated for the exam.

I always competed mostly with myself to do better. By the end of first year, I had a good system that served me well for the rest of medical school and now through residency.

njbmd 🙂

total Type B - non competitive. I feel like my successes of failures are not determined by the person sitting next to me so I don't see a need to be competitive. I also study a little bit each day (learned that from O Chem) and so, while I may be studying at the last minutes, I am rarely cramming for an exam.

A lot of this applies to me. I'm definitely type A, very critical and I worry about everything. I am competitive, but not extremely so (I like to know that I'm doing well compared to others, but I don't have to be the best). I like to have everything done well in advance, I'm very future-oriented. Yeah, I don't really like that I worry a lot and get stressed out easily but it's the way I am. My parents are the exact same away.

I am laid back IF I prepare ahead of time. Like Batman, I need preparation time. And I am really not competitive, I spend my time focusing on my grades to care about how other people do.

Heh yeah .... that's why I'm taking a review course ... otherwise I would end up doing the same. 😉

That sounds awesome ... I really have to start studying every day ... it would be sooooooooooooo much better than cramming. *Sigh*

I think I'm somewhere in between. I study in advance and alot because procrastinating makes me anxious and obviously I want to do well. And I do things like color-code notecards. But I also have slacker elements to my personality. I'm more likely to either skip class or sit in the back doodling than I am to sit in the front row, scribbling notes and asking questions. I also never pull all-nighters or drive myself crazy over studying. I plan a schedule, and I stick to it, and I generally quit for the day by 9:30pm. I don't stress about tests; I arrive at the last minute, write down what I know, and roll out. And I'm not competitive. Sure, anyone likes when they get the only 100 or something (not that it happens often), but I really don't care how my classmates do. Their grades don't affect me, so why worry about it? I'm probably like 25/75 Type A/B. And I probably put way too much thought into that.

I would have to be a mix of type A and B because I am meticulous, not easily stressed out, study til the last minute or two, laid back, don't need motivational tools, and am competitive usually only towards myself (not others).

Of course, everyone will have a bit of both, but if you had to pick one, which would it be?

I am not easily categorized. 😛

I find that Type A non-competitives are the most successful in their fields.

well, one can be competitive but not be a complete Ahole. if one is not competitive, then that person probably won't want the most "successful" positions from the start.

i find this extremely true

maybe but i'd say typeB-competitive have a better balance of personal life/success in profession
