is it wrong to say in an interview that what initially drew me to the dental profession was a youtube video of a wisdom tooth procedure...cuz to be frank no amount of shadowing has been as close to the mouth as the video I watched, that led me to further exploration through shadowing

I think that would be ok in explaining your "initial reason" for looking into dentistry, but then you have to also talk about all the shadowing you've done, dentists you've talked to, etc. to make it more official. Without those additional insights it would sound kind of naive, I guess...

I don't just think that it is okay, I think that the interviewers would love the originality of your spark of inspiration:meanie:

I mean, I dunno if you ACTUALLY base your entire decision to become a dentist because of a Youtube video but....sure, you can certainly say it was something that initially attracted you to learn more about the profession.

And I understand what ur saying about the video showing you more than shadowing, but there are things you see while shadowing that you don't get to observe in any video. Example how the dentist interacts with patients, coworkers, assistants, the hygienists, and the office managers. A dentist doesn't spend ALL his day in someone's mouth, they sometimes do paper work, manage the business, and usually, they are very interactive with the people around them.

I concur with 7iron. Good start but need some backing up.

Personally I believe it is not a good idea... For older generation of adcoms it might come off as ohh gee he is basing his decision of a video... I would say like doing research on dentistry. I wouldn't throw my dart and say while watching a video my intrest began... Something about it just dont sound right.

Like DW said... You need to show them that you understand the big pic and you are interested in it. Instead of just saying you watched a video just say you conducted thorough research and have decided...
