Hi everyone,

I have not done research in undergrad but got in a research-heavy school. I am very interested in doing hiv research in med school, but wonder if it is doable to start from scratch.

1. Has anyone been in the same shoes? If so, is it doable?
2. Is research really difficult for a beginner?
3. Would the research faculty guide me at first or expect me to already have some basic skills?
4. How do you balance study and research in med school?

Thank you for your time.

I'm not in medical school, but I will say this. It does help to have previous research experience when coming into a new lab, but often many of the things that you will be doing would be new even to someone with previous research experience, so you won't be as behind as you think. Lots of people do their first research in medical school.

Most research faculty will give you direction. Often they will tell you how to learn things on your own, or they will show you themselves, but they depend on you too, so they won't just throw you to the wolves (most times).
