I pretty much just finished my very last medical school interview today. I've finally reached the light at the end of this tunnel, and honestly, it's a pretty darn good feeling. I got to meet lots of new people, see tons of new places, spend money I didn't really have, and wear shoes which were no where near comfortable, but I'd do it all in a heartbeat... and you want to know why?

It's not the free food (edit: which really isn't free considering all the travel expenses and primary/secondary fees) and it's not the adventures that my travels provided (i.e., hitting that poor dog on my way to my interview). My reason is much more shallow than that.

My reason... interview eyecandy. Oh yes, folks, oh yes. Now I am not easily impressed, so this truly is saying something, but you boys -- especially when in your power suits 😍 😍 -- have done well. 👍 Keep up the good work, men.

Scoff at me, laugh, whatever, but believe me, the token hot interviewee just makes the day much more bearable for everyone. God intended it to be like this.

🙁 I must have just been unlucky - I only saw 1-2 guys that were cute in my travels.

I don't know... maybe my judgment is clouded by suit-fetish? At any rate, there was at least one at every interview (I had some big interview groups, though...).

It was always the same though. Chat, chat, chat... and then he'd drop the "G" bomb. D'OH!!! 😎 😛

Haha well the 1-2 I'm thinking off were ex-military in uniform, so I'm gonna say your suit fetish and my uniform fetish that explains things 😛

And don't worry - they'll probably lose that "G" bomb before they start in the Fall or sometime early in the year.

Well done, Severus. Question: how many pre-medical students are there at Gettysburg College, just out of curiosity?

Thanks.

As for the pre-medical situation at the 'burg, well, that's a pretty good question. As with any school, there are always a ton of pre-meds during the first two years, but that number dwindles quite a bit after organic. I'd say we consistently have about five or so people apply to medical school during any given cycle. I know of two other Gettysburg people on this site who are applying this year, so maybe they'll correct me if my numbers are a little off.

Men of SDN, if I teach you nothing else (and believe me, I probably won't) it is this... behold the power of the suit. 😉

I thought they were young, wearing glasses and asian for the most part. Not my style 🙂. But it doesn't help that I'm old (well, not that old, but older than the average lot of you premeds), wear contacts and am not asian. Ah well.

im really unaware...what's the g bomb?

Honestly, I mostly saw just a ton of white people on my travels, but there was a pretty nice looking asian guy at one place. I'm an equal opportunity oogler (ogler? I don't even know if that's a word).

Lol i thought u meant the other G, u know the type that tends to be typed as guys who dress really well, is pristine and amazingly good looking until the g bomb makes u realize ull never have a chance in hell lol.

Funny you mention the power of the suit- thats how i actually won over my girlfriend from her man. She knew I liked herlike that and i deliberately walked in front of them with my power suit on when i did a fashion show for college. She was on the rocks with her man and in that defining moment, I won her over

Now, this summer I'll probably go to italy to meet her folks and again one day when i ask them for permission for marriage 😍

 Well, God knows I have a history of having that happen to me too.

Women... we always want what we can't have. 🙄

Awwwwww...

but remember, work that suit. 😉

The suit is very underutilized.

I forgot to mention that she was also there with her man too  A passive aggressive way to take away another woman

Speaking of which I should call her, men with suits might be around :scared:

Fellas...wear the suit to ask out a lady, it usually works 😉

Since I'm a young, glasses wearing, asian guy, I kind of resent that. But anyways, all of my interviews so far have been caucasian dominated. If that's any indication, it's definately going to be a change jumping into med school when every school I've attended so far has been at least half asian.

aw, dsh, there's some girl out there who will or does love you! and i have many young, glasses-wearing, asian friends... i'm just not that attracted to them, which is fine, b/c i'm not their type either! but i interviewed at a lot of UCs... which are fairly Asian dominated sometimes... you'd like it out there 🙂.

Before teaching my first Kap class, I told my boss, who was dropping something off, that I knew a few of the students. She says,"I know! There are a whole bunch of asians. I bet you know all of them."

Your statement made me think back to that moment.

My student interviewer at one of my schools dropped the G bomb! I didn't realize I was giving off "I'm into you" vibes. Pre-emptive strike? I just find it slightly odd that he threw that in there mid-convo.

When did you see me again?😀

She's talking about me, stupid.

But on a serious note, I noticed the heavy interviewing schools had a much richer crop of female interviewees. At one school, there were 13 interviewees and 10 of them were female, and I can confidently say that about half of them were attractive.

Fine, Doctor of Genes, I'm the other 1-2 guys she's talking about. Oh yes.

Only one interview i went to had a hot girl. PLease tell me that not all pre-med women are ugly. PLEASE!

Yeah... I don't know what's up with that. I mean, while I am generally fairly gregarious, I am pretty sure I'm not giving off an "I wanna jump your bones in the broom closet" vibe. Guys always complain about how girls drop the boyfriend bomb whenever they're just talking to them, but I get that all the time from dudes. Most of the time it just happens in the middle of a conversation and, I'm just sitting there like, "WTF does your girlfriend have to do with Rab-GTPases?" 😕

Perhaps some SDN men could shed a little light on this topic. 😎

I haven't noticed any quasimodos on the interview trail, but maybe my perspective is a little skewed because I'm totally hideous.

That said, I hear a lot of my med school guy friends complain about this phenomenon and while I'm not going to be one of those girls who gets on here and is all like, "What are you talking about? Med school gurlz rule! We're s0 h0t!! Want to touch the hiney!!! lol rolf," I generally don't think that a given med school class is any worse looking than a random sampling of 100 people. I think it hovers around average for the most part, but there could always be outliers. So while I wouldn't go in expecting to find a host of Adriana Lima look-a-likes in white coats, you might luck out and have one or two. :luck:

i think it can only be nice for women, or men, to make their "taken" status known early on in a friendly conversation. it prevents an awkward situation. a female friend also pointed out that it serves as a "test": if the man continues to talk to the woman after finding out she is taken, she places him in higher regard. this could be good if she's single down the road and you still know her, or if she has single friends.

it is sort of odd to mention s.o.'s at an interview. maybe the interviewers are concerned because they're going to give you their email at the end of the interview, and they want to make it clear it is for professional purposes.

so riddle me this: if suits are the hot ticket to making the ladies swoon, how are we supposed to justify wearing them to anatomy lab, bbq in the park, or other informal locations? are tucked-in, buttoned-up shirts with dress pants a close second?

Marines.... *drools*

I seriously have a problem with the uniform fetish. I swear it's from growing up next to an air force base.

I sure hope so..........🙁

Bumping.

Doctor~Detroit, I will address your question later in the day. It's thought-provoking and requires further observational studies. Does dress casual have the same effect? Hmmmmmmmmm....😎

As long as they're not pleated.

Most ladies are into button-downs with the sleeves rolled-up, and a little chest (but not too much).

OMG.. that picture...   Those look like Amish pants.

But, yes, you're correct. I think the ladies like the whole "I've been working hard at the office" sleeves rolled-up look. 👍

And would this also be the place to bring up the "no ties with a short sleeve butto-down?" I mean, unless you want to look like Dwight...

except that you had no back up schools, how in the world did you not get an acceptance your first round? Your stats are awesome! This is scary. What do you think you did differently between the first app and the second app to have gotten such different results?

is there a fetish you don't have? :meanie:

Eh... I applied late, applied to too few schools, and my PS sucked.

No need to be scared. I think people run into problems when they don't apply early enough or apply to the wrong schools. I just played the game better this year.

:luck: to you.

I can top that..at a recent interview, an MS2 joined us for lunch. She was quite cute, but not quite my type. Noticing her, a female interviewee started asking her about married life in med school (since the interviewee was also married), how hard it was for the her husband, and all that...finally, she asked if the MS2's husband was also a student. The MS2 turned bright red, and said 'Actually, its my female partner.' I think everyone at the table had a look of shock and took a second to recover...

Ouch.

That kind of surprises me - I've had a lot of people either come out to me or tell me that when they say partner they mean same sex. And I've never seen one get embarrassed about it.

I wonder why her lifestyle still embarrasses her? I mean she has to be used to people assuming she's married to a man.

hahha, OMG I thought exactly the same. 👍

Probably because it sucks to have to correct someone. People sometimes don't pronounce my name correctly. I'll get teh rosey cheeks while correcting them. Mainly because I know I'd feel bad if I were in the other person's shoes.

Kudos to her for not jumping all over her about it and getting irate over a simple mistaken assumption.

I don't think she was embarassed by her lifestyle (clearly she married or civil unioned this woman), but I think more by the assumption then having to explain. I was actually shocked...she didn't strike me as going that way, so I guess I assumed the same thing as the interviewee that asked her. It just created a nice little awkward pause during lunch as we all tried to gather ourselves and act like we meet married lesbians every day.

The school..was in NY but not the city.

mhhhhm meeting a lot of hot science guys was definitely a perk to the interview season, a few numbers were even exchanged, good times.

I would also like to give a shout out to the cute student interviewers/tour guides! I had to check myself several times at some interviews to make sure I didn't go into flirt mode. I 😍 smart boys.
