What have you seen or had on your surgery orals? I thought that if we could compile a list, it would help people prepare on topics they might not have thought of.

What I've heard:

Bright red blood per rectum
Sigmoid Volvulus
Ruptured AAA
Acute Pancreatitis
Cholangitis

Your standard trauma stuff:

18 y/o coming s/p MVA, 32 y/o stabbed in the stomach, 62 y/o fall from roof etc.

They just want you to walk through the ABCs and when to take them for imaging, when to go straight to the OR, etc.

I would say... acute abdomen, cholecystitis, hernias, surgical oncology (colon, breast, lung, endocrine -- i.e. solitary breast lesion, lung nodule, thyroid nodule, etc.), peripheral vascular disease, trauma (gsw always gets an ex-lap!!)... GI bleeds, liver diseases / portal HTN / TIPS / varices... anything with multiple steps in the workup with different branch points.

when to do surgery
WHEN NOT TO DO SURGERY
imaging, workup, staging
