They are real... and real applicants get pull out of the waitlist into MD/PhD programs. Please note, as shown in my comments thread, that slightly over 40% of the eventual 2019 accepted MD/PhD class has not been selected as of yet. You could send an update (if significant) about every 6-8 weeks from now until matriculation date (or rejection).

Hoping to hear some good news probably next week, then will soon update these threads with my cycle info, but man, how is everyone else feeling about this waiting process?! I know adcoms probably feel the same way this year, but I’m not sure if it’s quite as bad as it is on our side of things... I’m just trying to keep my top choice updated every 4-6 weeks with meaningful updates and hoping it’ll be my time soon enough. I feel like I’m a strong candidate and know this path is where I belong, but am not like some of the superstar applicants I know that have like 6+ acceptances at this point. Hoping in the end everyone goes where they deserve AND fit the best and that it’s sooner rather than later!

Forgive me if my opinion is not wanted. I just wanted to say that I hope the same as well. I've met some amazing people while interviewing and I want nothing more than to see all of them accomplish their dreams. I would love to have them as classmates and am sure that they will make great physician scientists. This process can be very disheartening because of all the effort put in, just to be told no. I sincerely do hope that everyone finds their home in a program.

I’ve been avoiding this and similar sites but I thought I should add mine for the record. I’ve tried to emotionally distance myself from this process as much as possible and will let the chips fall where they may. I can’t lie: this year has not been easy, but its difficulty has forced me to re-examine things more closely and reflect a lot on who I am. I trust in above, and indeed, many times in my life, outcomes that I have perceived as set-backs or sub-optimal have opened the door for better things. My best wishes to everyone else in this predicament and to those who have more certainty regarding their futures. Having followed your journeys throughout this cycle, I am confident that you all will be excellent MD/PhD students and physician scientists.

There is a ton of WL movement for MD/PhD programs (as a percentage of all accepts, more than MD). It sucks to be on that many, but I’m very confident you will get off at least one holding that number. Be sure to communicate directly with programs and inform them of your intent/interest as this is a very small field and that might help you.

Yea specially for schools with mandatory summer rotations this will probably make it really hard for many to find decent housing, say goodbye to family/friends, and get settled in a new city (all to be done perhaps in a week or two) before starting an 8yr program.
