2020-2021 Pain Fellowship Interview Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey guys, rising CA2 here planning on applying to chronic pain.

Do you guys have any advice on things I should do/not do to get myself ready for applications?

Good luck to you all and hopefully I see some of you during interviews!

I'm not sure if anybody else has some thoughts but my sense is that more interviews are being sent out than last year, and they possibly could be more applicants this year(hearsay from talking to other applicants...who knows?). In the few interviews (3) were program directors flat out mention how many people they are interviewing it was more than the Data that is listed on FRIEDA, so I would think the previous "magic number," to match would be hard to correlate to our atypical application cycle.

I think it's an institutional thing. I know of two institutions that interviewed around the same as previously and around half of previously. But certainly it seems like some institutions have tons of interview dates.

So how do we add our NRMP number if our ERAS applications have been removed already lol. ERAS really dropped the ball on this one.

Did anyone get a confirmation from Yale about interview dates after the initial request?

Spoke to ERAS. they said if we registered for the NRMP appropriately and provided the correct AAMC ID# then there's nothing else we have to do. So there's no need to put your NRMP# back into ERAS.

Thanks for this info! So because most or all of us participated in NRMP match for our residency, we technically won't get a token or a new NRMP number to entire into the ERAS page correct?

Once you register for the pain fellowship match (which just opened on wednesday) thats all you have to do. i registered and paid the $85. I don't think I received a token or anything.

Nah. I looked up the coordinators email on the Yale website and emailed her there.
I replied with my preferences to the message through eras. That worked for me. She replied to confirm my interview date.

This may be a repost but I've been hearing of programs offering spots outside of the match after interviews are sent out. I'm guessing that fellowships are not "all in" for NRMP.

True, that is what makes this year match difficult I think. Hard to know how many programs to interview at before you can "feel safe" about matching.

Pain is not an “all in” specialty. Other specialties such as Sports are.

Yeah any data points on what programs are the one's offering spots outside the match. Would be good to know for all applicants. Also when would be a ideal time to let your #1 program know that you are ranking them as #1.

For Neuro/PMR Applicants, would this theoretically reduce the number of "other" spots that programs have. For example, program A has 5 seats and rank them Anes/pmr/neuro/psych in whatever way they like. Program B has 4 spots, 3 for Anes, 1 for other.. I wonder if this would affect these specific applicants.

Has anyone been able to sign up for the EVMS interview on ERAS? There are dates listed but it doesn't allow you to select one.

As far as "telling your program they are your #1", I firmly believe this won't do anything. Maybe it helped for anesthesia residency when they interviewed 300 people to tell who actually wants to come, but I think when it's 30 interviewees they aren't going to rank you higher for this.

My question was if anybody was actually mailing/emailing thank you's after interviews? I find it weird to do so, especially when there is, say, 1 panel interview with 6 interviewers. But my SO in business said for her job interviews they always mail thank yous.

I do it because i don’t see any downside and only a (small) potential upside.

My interview season is pretty much done save for two, so just posting for any lurkers applying next year who's interested.

US MD grad, current anesthesia resident (let's call it a well-regarded program)
Steps I/II: 245-255
1 pub, 7 other presentations/abstracts/posters
4 LORs

20 applications (submitted mid-February)
Interviews: Northwestern, Cedars Sinai, Iowa, UCSD, Columbia, NYU, Michigan, Case Western (UH), Brigham, Cornell
Rejections/Silence: Stanford, UCLA, UCSF, Hopkins, WashU, Duke, Mt Sinai, UWash, Penn, UVA

Overall, pretty happy with what I ended up with, but also pretty bummed with some of the rejections. In hindsight, I would've applied to more programs if I knew a pandemic was going to happen. Also feel like there's less of a regional bias for fellowship than there was for residency, as most of my invites came from outside my region.

Per previous posts, people seemed to agree it’s not necessary. Just log into NRMP, provide your AAMC#, and pay the fee. Then you should be fine.

Anyone have insight on Northwestern's status in the match? Looks like they are "withdrawn" on NRMP

So if a program didn't officially send out an interview, would it be safe to say they have a high likelihood of matching outside the match at this point?

Besides cost of living and location, any thoughts on comparing

Vanderbilt, Michigan, and Beth Israel?

What do you want to do work wise afterwards? I would lean Michigan over Vanderbilt and BID, unless you need an academic stamp in which case I might elevate Boston.

I’m curious if the “academic stamp” of BID/Harvard translates into better job opportunities. Ideally would like to end up in the southeast.

Not necessarily unless you're looking to stay in academics.
I generally counsel that it helps to train in the region you want to settle down in long term, with the understand that it may take one or two real jobs for you to understand what you really want out of your career.

What if you are looking for PP jobs but don't get an interview in your target region? Then you basically just pick the brand name spot?

Yeah, brand helps, but often times faculty or people in your target region have connections to specific training programs. Realize that most people understand the brand of the college/basketball/football team more than the quality of the pain training, so sometimes a crappy training program has a better brand with patients than it should.

Regardless, start with the end in mind. Look at where the people in your target region trained. Look at where graduates of your top programs go. Connections are helpful.

Location aside, can someone please discuss UPenn and UPMC?

I can’t speak to Penn other than their PD recently left for Duke.

I really liked UPMC - seemed like their interventional exposure was going to increase with the new faculty from Cleveland Clinic (i think?) they hired. Faculty also seemed very down to earth. I know someone who trained there recently and said they enjoyed it. Lots of fellows but there seems to be a lot of volume to support it. The downsides in my mind were the MANY different locations they have to cover and they don’t use Epic. Overall I really liked the program.

Are you thinking of any places in particular?
