(If it doesn't belong in this thread, someone please delete my response) First off, hearing "No" sucks, none of us here can deny this especially when it's from someone or something that means a lot to us.I just got the R from Iowa. Devastated. What little hope I had of getting into an MD/PHD program this year is absolutely gone. Doubt I'll get an II anywhere, considering a lot of the programs I have left are higher ranked. Maybe it's God/fate telling me I'm not cut out to be a physician-scientist. Lowkey regretting I spent 2 gap years as a lab monkey with no life. 🤷♂️

Second off, the interviews + rejections trackers from both this year and the past couple are telling me that applying to these programs is far less predictable than we'd like them to be. Iowa's rejection != everything above USNews #41 will tell you to get lost, this is not deterministic. The one certainty is that many people in the process are going to get beaten down with rejections from schools across the rankings/geographical/research strength/lay prestige spectrum, and that is perfectly normal even for people with bulletproof profiles. All this to say you aren't being singled out.
Honestly, I'd expect to be surprised at some point. You will have no idea who takes a liking to you, why they take a liking to you, and when they take a liking to you. Speaking from personal experience, your outlook on the cycle could do a complete 180 in a single week and you can get fan mail (read: interviews) from schools you never expected to receive attention from. There is the remainder of October and all of November + December to reasonably expect to get interview invitations and I think counting yourself out this early is a bit silly, especially if you submitted your secondaries later than most people here did. Keep your head up and your expectations realistic, don't let a single rejection from Iowa drag your mental health into the mud.
Looking forward to seeing you start an MD-PhD next year.
