Community based versus academic hospital training.

Why does this matter? Why are people soooo concern about this element of their future training?

Is this something akin to DO versus MD, something that doesn’t matter at the end of the day.

Or is this the factor finally differentiates The weak from the strong trainees !

Completely depends on the specialty and goals. For some specialties it can make a difference in your overall skill even if you end up in the community setting. For others, it doesn't mean anything as far as your day to day as an attending. It has to do with the mechanism through which each specialty accomplishes its work each day and if that training will ultimately tangibly enhance it or not.

It is far more important than the MD versus DO debate and isn't exaggerated. Residency is far more important than med school. The MD versus DO debate is mostly centered around the fact that DO schools largely are working against you as a student than their MD counterparts and for fringe situations such as competitive specialties and good research opportunities. That doesn't apply to most med students and is therefore more irrelevant. Solid residency training whether community or academic is what grossly sets the trajectory for your ability the rest of your career in any career.

It’s very dependent on the specialty and your career goals. The training can definitely be different between the two. Not necessarily better or worse, just different.
