I just wanted to know how everyone with slightly below average MCAT scores is faring. Has anyone been accepted with a score under 30 yet? I know ad coms don't only look at numbers, but I feel like my 27 may be holding me down. Anyone with good news so I can have some hope?

:(

Hi there. First of all, slightly below average would be slightly below 24.

If the rest of your application is good, and depending on where you're applying, chances are you'll come out with at least a wait list and possibly an acceptance.

Good luck!

I think Dr. Foxy meant slightly below the average mcat scores of those accepted into med school. I think the average mcat of those accepted is 29.5.

Dr. Foxy, I understand how you feel. I scored a 27Q and I have only heard a "peep" from Downstate and I have not heard anything else from any of the other schools that I applied to. I guess it could be worse; I could have a bunch of rejections (and I don't have any yet, although I expect a bunch of them). I'm rooting for you! :D :) :D

I have a 28R and received acceptances from my two state schools. I pulled my app after that because one of those was my 1st choice.

There was a post a while back regarding this topic, but safe to say, there are some people who got in with 28 and someone else got in with 25 or 26. I feel so envious because I have an average MCAT score and a good GPA, yet I still haven't found love. It seems worse for me because now I'm searching for other reasons holding me back.

As you said ad coms don't only look at numbers so keep faith in yourself. I know many people that have scored a 27 in MCAT and have been accepted to MEd school. Good luck

Thank you for all of your support! Good luck to everyone

Imagine my surprise when I signed on this evening and I saw a post signed Foxy   Just to make a distinction...Foxy Doc (me) is a different person than Doctor Foxy (someone else). I guess imitation is the sincerest form of flattery!

Foxy (the original)

there's a chance that Foxy is her last name. if it is..then she's probably the original, making you extra crispy.

Sorry FoxyDoc....I've been called foxy for 5 years, but you signed up to SDN first, so I guess you are the original here. I wish it were my last name :) Sorry for any confusion

~Foxy numero dos :(

I got a 28O (9V,9P,10B) on my MCAT and have been accepted to two schools. So there is hope!! Good luck.

29 MCAT, accepted to Tufts and SLU last year (off waitlist for both). Currently a first year at Tufts.

Scored 29Q, accepted to one school, interviews at all 3 schools I applied to. Don't worry under-30ers! :D

28P, accepted at MCW and waiting to hear on 3 more. Hang in there Doc Foxy, there's plenty of hope. Good luck.

HEY ALL-

Lets remember that GPA has a TON do do with acceptances...an under 30 MCAT acceptance with a GPA below 3.00 is very different from someone with a 29/3.9 or something like that (obviously). As such, this thread is really subjective and potentially misleading...

Just my two cents of course! :)

Accepted with 28R and average GPA. (lots of extracurriculars and work experience though) Also interviewed at some top schools, including UCSF. There is hope! ;)

Accepted at one place with a 26N and 3.4 GPA.
Also on "hold" for an interview .. whatever that means!

for those who have acceptances, it would be helpful if you told us what school...

Accepted at Univ. of Miss. with 29M (8,10,11) and 3.7 GPA.

I got in with a sub-30 score...

Here are a few encouraging acceptances from my friends (all from Hopkins.)

GPA/MCAT/Major/Schools (2001-2002 cycle)
3.3/28/BME/Jefferson (Also interviewed at Vermont,GW, NJ schools, NYMC)
3.2/28/Neuroscience/Jefferson (Also interviewed at Hopkins and MD)
3.2/26/German/No acceptances (Interviewed at West Virginia and MCP)

GPA/MCAT/Major/Schools (2000-2001 cycle)
3.5/29/BME/Georgetown, MSU (Currently attending Georgetown)
3.3/29/International Relationsions/Baylor, NYMC, Einstein, all TX schools (Currently attending Baylor)
3.2/29/Psych/NYMC (Currently attending NYMC, but was waitlisted at Sinai)
3.8/25/Neuroscience/SUNY Upstate (Waitlisted at Hopkins)

Keep your hopes up. Good luck!

27 MCAT last August here...got accepted at one of my state schools (U. Kentucky) and decided that was just where I wanted to be, so I withdrew my other apps. :)

Good luck!! :D

Raina

Thanks Raina! I can especially relate to your story cuz I got the same MCAT score and I applied late.....thanks for the encouragement everyone!

Yall would benefit mucho mas if people posted not only their mcat score but also
1. undergrad school (@ hopkins a 3.3 is HARD to get)
2. GPA
3. school accepted
4. perhaps your major (BME is much harder than psychology and adcoms sometimes do notice that--especially if you majored in two disciplines)
5. Breakdown of MCAT. getting a 28 (11, 8, 9) is very different from getting a 28 (8, 10, 10). VERY different!

that would surely help people get a better perspective.

Dr. Foxy,

I saw you live in Boca Raton. Did you apply to UM?

Yes I applied to UMiami....it was my number one choice cuz I would be close to home and I thought I would have a good chance there...and I'm a Spanish and Latin American Studies major, so my skills would be very useful there...however my secondary app was not sent in til Nov 5, so maybe that's why I still have no love.....are you from FL, marbley?

I was accepted yesterday at my in-state school:
MCAT: 28 (8V,10PS,10BS), M
GPA: 3.75
Major: Biochemistry/ Biophysics
Oregon State University
There is still hope, so hang in there.
Rob

Foxy,

Yes I too live in South Florida. I will be applying to UM and Nova for next year. I am surprised that you haven't heard from Miami yet as your stats seem right in their average ballpark. I assume that you didn't apply to Nova? I will keep my fingers crossed for you!

thanks marley!!! i think i'm considered a late applicant, so hopefully i will hear soon...i didn't apply to nova cuz i want to be an MD and i didn't have a letter of rec from a DO (but I do know a resident)...i worked with their chief resident and his wife over the summer, however, and they are very smart and nice people, so i'm sure it's a good school

Got into a couple of schools last year, top choices were UCI (UC Irvine) and SLU (Saint Louis University). Work on your whole application, you need to stick out. Recommendation letters and extracurriculars fulfill that role. Don't give up. By the way, had a friend get into hopkins w/a first score of 26 or 27, but kick ass GPA and extracurriculars/rec letters. Another got a 28 and is among the top of his class at his med school. MCATS aren't always a good predictor of success. Good luck.

- Wyldstyle2000

GPA/MCAT/Major/Schools (2000-2001 cycle)
3.4 (not quite 3.5)/29N/Biochem/UCI, SLU (Currently attending SLU)

Has anybody else been accepted with mcats under 30? Hopefully one day soon I can add to this list!

p.s. BUMP

:p

I have a 29 and have been accepted to Loyola and Albany...there's plenty of hope!

I got a 28 and was acccepted to UTMB- Galveston.

I didn't read through this entire thread so I'm probably just going to repeat what someone has already said. At least 50% of current med students in the country were accepted with MCATs of 30 or less. I know the published statistics are tricky and can be easily misread, but a 28 MCAT is solid for almost any school (except WashU  ). I think a more interesting thread will be "Anyone accepted with MCATs below 26?". Don't sweat, you'll be fine.

I just want to hear real life stories, otherwise I don't believe the stats. I got a 27....still waiting to hear is soemone else with my score got in. I know they look at everything, but I think my score is causing my problems, and just wanted to know if anyone in my situation had any luck. So far just a handful have.

When I was a sophomore a girl in my Ochem class got into the top-30 state school here Early Decision in October with 27. Though she had a 3.9. That's the only case I know; but that's cause as a math major, I KNOW less than 10 people that applied to med school.

I got into Loyola...MCAT 27Q and GPA 3.51. Lots of ECs, good work experiences, but who doesn't have these? All you need is the one interview! Good luck guys.

I wished I applied to Loyola! I never turned in the secondary b/c I missed the deadline

Well congrats to you EMTgirl!!!!

Congrats on your acceptance EMTgirl. I also scored a 27Q on the mcat. I applied to 13 schools and I have only heard from Downstate (they asked me questions post-completed application). This waiting drives me crazy!

:p :p

Good luck to everyone.

Good luck to everyone.•••••Hey Daisygirl,
When did you hear from Downstate? Are you a NYS resident? because I am and I haven't heard from them yet. I try not to worry I spoke to a 3rd year student there and she told me they didn't interview her until end of Feb. I guess I still have a slim chance!

Hi Doctor Foxy,
No, I have not interviewed at downstate. They contacted me via mail after my application had been reviewed and asked me to (1)fax a copy of my fall 2001 grades (2)they wanted me to explain what have I done in the past two years other than attend college (this one is a long story). Now I thought that was a good sign; I had not been rejected upon review of my app, but I have not heard anything since and it has been a month :( . So I don't know what is going on :( .

Mellow, you pm'd me awhile ago and I explained the whole thing to you :) . Don't give up hope!

Hey mellow....I interviewed at downstate in sept and they told us 3-8 weeks....I heard by rumor 3 weeks=acceptance, 8 weeks=waitlist/rejection...so in january I still hadn't heard and feeling very dispondant I finally called they wouldn't tell me over the phone but had sent a decision 4 days earlier....I finally 11 days after that received the letter to my surprise was an acceptance...so don't give up the hope

Congrats trout........Is this your only acceptance thus far? Do you mind PM'ing me your stats for comparison as to why the heck they haven't called me yet for an interview! I put so much trust into that school and they are just stabbing me in the back.

Also on "hold" for an interview .. whatever that means!•••••Hey - where were you accepted? Just wondering. I have a 25 MCAT and a 3.66 GPA, and just got put on the waiting list for University of Wisconsin and I'm still waiting from 7 other schools. Thanks!

I was accepted at Albany, Cincinnati, and waitlisted at USUHS. Interviewed at NYMC and Dartmouth a few weeks ago, waiting to hear back from them.

Stats: 3.5 GPA (3.35 Sci), 9,10,10,S MCAT
Exercise and Sport Science major.

Hope that this helps. :)

TSpoon. Your stats give me hope because I have similiar scores as yours.
I have one interview for VCU/MCV that has yet to happen - when my priority score increases, i guess they will grant me that interview. But the waiting is agonizing! I don't think I can handle going through this process again.
Doc. Foxy, I feel your pain! NYMC sent me that e-mail on accident also. I just hope they send me an interview!

Good luck to you all!
