I'm 4th year medical student interested in Otolaryngology. Recently I rotated with a private ENT who recommended I do a rotation at the Univ. of Pittsburgh with an old ENT colleague of his for the month of October. However, I am scheduled to do an ENT rotation at Gainesville for the same month. My school doesn't cover the malpractice insurance of 1 million/ 3 million Pittsburgh requires and I would have to cover that expense. The rotation at Pittsburgh would approximately cost about $ 5,000 (including malpractice, airline tickets, room/board) whereas Gainesville would be substantially less. I know the ENT community is a small one and having a someone in your corner an invaluable asset. Is the rotation at Pittsburgh really worth doing? What would you guys do in my place?

Unless Pitt is your number 1 choice and you don't have any other faculty willing to write you a letter or rec then I would not recommend it. Remember you will be spending about another 3-5 thousand on traveling expenses. It is a small community, but if you have decent board scores you will get interviews. Just my 2 cents.
