The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders – Fifth Edition (DSM-55) separates mental disorders into groups based on whether or not their symptoms have similar characteristics. Which of the following disorders would be classified in the same group as panic disorders?
A. Post-traumatic stress disorder, which is characterized by onset of fear-based emotional or behavioral symptoms
B. Brief psychotic disorder, which is characterized by sudden onset of positive psychiatric symptoms
C. Selective mutism, which is characterized by social anxiety and lack of speech in select social situations
D. Somatic symptom disorder, which is characterized by onset of several somatic symptoms like pain or fatigue

Answer is C. Makes some sense as the word anxiety is mentioned in choice C. However, isn't PTSD a subcategory of anxiety disorders; my textbook categorizes PTSD, OCD, panic disorder, GAD, phobias, and a couple more under the broad category of Anxiety disorders.

The key difference here is that the DSM-V has moved PTSD into a category labeled as Trauma and Stressor-Related Disorders. Selective mutism is now included under Anxiety Disorders, so that's why C is correct and A is not. Is your textbook going off of the DSM-IV ?
