Just wanted to see if anyone can share some last minute advice. I'm interviewing this Saturday. From what I read up on the interview feedback site, it seems pretty kick back and comfortable, hopefully. Thank people!

My best friend interviewed there. It was easy, went well. Is this your only option, because why spend the money to come out from Cal? Lets be honest, Drexel is not a first choice school. It's generally considered a school of last choice. So, if you are already in at a school, why spend the money to come out here to interview at a school that you won't attend unless it's your only option?

I do like one thing about Drexel and that's the PIL program.

Just an open question but why is it that Drexel gets such a bad rap? It's one of the oldest medical schools in the country (despite it's new name) and it had a pretty good reputation when it was MCP-Hahnemann. I also think that being associated with an pretty good engineering university will only act to help Drexel Medical School's reputation over time. And I don't know about what other people are looking for, but in some pretty tough specialties suc has derm, anesthesiology, radiology, etc they match very well. I realize it has the largest class size by number, but when you consider that there are 50 our of the 250 that are in PIL and don't go to class with the others there are larger classes out there. I realize that there are places that an idividual doesn't "fit" with, but it seems to be more than that with Drexel. I'd really like to hear some opinions on this.

I am curious about the same thing.

what is the universal criteria for "first choice school"? School of first and last choice is in the eyes of the beholder. Don't propagate immaturity.

Yeah, totally. It's ever so immature to think about the reputation of your medical school... I mean, it'll only affect your entire career.

The words one attending I asked applied to Drexel was, "barely allopathic". That sort of rep is more than just neutral... it'll hurt you.

You see that's where most people make their mistake. It is not your school that will affect your entire career, it's YOU. If you work hard and have what it takes, you will do well anywhere you go, at least in the U.S. That's the great thing about medical schools here: there is no such thing as a bad medical education. There may be some with better resources/reputations, but you still have to maintain particular standards to become a physician. Refering to Drexel, while one attending may see it that way, according to their match lists there are plenty of others who don't share his opinion. If you think simply going to a top-20 school guarantees success, then I think you'll be in for a reality check when the time comes for matching.

Here's some objective data on drexel's 2003 matchlist.... Does it look like coming from Drexel hurt those students who are doing their residencies at Hopkins, Harvard, or UPenn? How about those people lucky enough to match in highly competitive residencies like derm, ortho, ent, rads, or anesthesia? I don't think so... The lesson to be learned is.... if you do well in school, you will match well. Drexel is barely "hardly allopathic" whatever that means. It's so funny to hear these uninformed undergraduates (NOT even medical students yet) try to dis some schools they know NOTHING about... in any case, for a "barely allopathic" school, there are quite a few students who are going onto residencies that would be highly coveted by others...

I don't know why people get so angry on this site, its like you ask for an honest opinion and no one can share theirs without getting blasted! Its like people come here just to pick fights.

I totally agree with jedirampage, how you do in school is the most important thing in relation to your career, not where you go. If you want to get into a very competative residency you need to do well on the boards and in school, and as you can see from Drexel's match list you can still do that if you go there. Not all anthesiologists went to harvard. You can go to a "great" school and still be a bad doctor. All US medical schools are good schools, and unless you want to go into academic medicine or something it won't matter, your patients probably will never know what medical school you went to, they just want you to be a good doctor.

But to get back to the topic, I would just try and be positive, at my drexel interview they mostly just wanted to double check my file, and ask if there was anything I wanted to add. Just try and seem interested, don't go in with the attituded that it sucks of something, because they will sense your disinterest and probably waitlist you. I didn't think that Drexel was a bad place at all, their curriculum sounds a lot more interesting then some other places I've been.

thanks for the advice, i appreciate it. just for the record, i think drexel is a fantastic school with superb facilities. to answer a question from the posts, i'm accepting the interview invitation because as of right now, i have no acceptances, and mostly every school in my home town, cali, gave me the boot. thanks babinksi for posting the matchlist.

Good luck!

no, decline the interview...drexel sucks! they...umm...eat babies there...yeah, they do!

seriously tho, best of luck! drexel is a fine institution, nothing wrong with drexel or philly, look at their match list, damn!
go get'em!

i'm on hold or something until may :(
the more people that drop out the better my chance is...so...oh well...

Good luck on the interview. Trust me, if I wasn't in at a place, I'd be happy to go to Drexel. I'd wash the dean's car every week, every day. All I said was if you already in at a school, why bother. But since you're not in, then definitely interview. In the end, it won't matter. You'll be a doctor. I acutally know two people at Drexel and they really like it.

*sigh* there are people here that have multiple acceptances to all sorts of schools.

We are not "barely" allopathic, we study the same curriculum as everyone else that takes the boards.

Feel free to PM me if you have any particular questions.

Yeah, don't pull your penis out during the interview. It doesn't work like it does in porn movies. :(

I think Drexel is an awesome school. They treated me like a family member from start to finish, and were incredibly warm and supportive. I mean, I would go to a school without that as well, but I went to an ivy ugrad and we never had any warm fuzzy stuff going on. We had a great reputation but competitive??? can you say "freezer burn?" Ouch.

I've done the big name thing and now for me, I want to be in an environment that wants to help me succeed. Drexel is so supportive that it would seem hard not to do really well. Holy cr@p! look at that match list!! Residencies at JHopkins and Cornell in the most compettive specialites. At the professional level, what counts the most is your ability to do well in the clinical years, in other words YOU are what make the difference.

Ok, I'm getting down off my soap box now, but I just wanted to voice my opinion here.

:)
