I have a question about the facts tables that AAMC published last month. In the past, the hispanic acceptance rates have been higher than, say, the white acceptance rates for a given GPA/MCAT combination.

Then there's this: https://www.aamc.org/download/321512/data/factstable25-1.pdf

And here's the white version: https://www.aamc.org/download/321518/data/factstable25-4.pdf

What is happening here? Everywhere you go you see that being hispanic gives you a boost statistically, but this seems to indicate otherwise. Are the data complete for this cycle?
"Hispanic" is a general category of self definition that includes two groups that are widely considered under-represented in medicine (UIM). Most schools recognize Mexican Americans and Mainland Puerto Ricans as UIM. Some schools also include applicants from Central American origin.

Many, many applicants identify as Hispanic yet represent communities not considered UIM. These applicants have no particular advantage, though language skills will still be valued...

Man, what is going on with the hispanic applicants in the 3.8 - 4.0 and 33-45 MCAT ranges? ~40-50% acceptance rates are very surprising.

These are the applicants to which I was referring. Sometimes people apply top heavy to schools under the assumption that they will be considered under-represented. This can lead to worse than expected outcomes.

Looks like the Hispanic data is clearly not finalized. If you're applying in 2014-2015, don't look at any of this data until May: it's premature and any conclusions you could draw might be wrong. Just focus on being the best applicant you can be and wait for the final stats before making any decisions.
