My nephew has ASD and finds the presence of a cat he can stroke and listen to the sound of it purring to be very calming when he's experiencing behavioural/sensory/and/or anxiety issues. Is this an example of the placebo effect or is there actually something neurobiological going on with the ASD brain and repetitive soothing behaviours?
