I was just wondering if the average AA and TS for accepted students has gone up this year/closing cycle?

I think the average is 19/19 (and maybe SDN is messing with my head a little) but it seems that a lot of those accepted had 20s or above. Any input would be appreciated! 🙂

There's a spreadsheet around here, I'm sure. But I doubt it's jumped to 20s given past trends in increase. I can't find the most recent yet. But the new guide should be out soon.

Average DAT first-year students:
2006-2007: 19.3AA
2007-2008: 19.4AA
2008-2009: 18.8AA
2009-2010: 18.9AA
2010-2011: 19.2AA

Dont use SDN for a basis on averages. the average is still ~19 and many people get in with 18's

Yeah or people like me with 23AA/23TS and still can only get 2 interviews and 2 waitlists.

I would personally just go by score averages on a school by school basis. With most schools you'll prob find the averages to be closer to 20. A lot of the schools that bring the averages down are the newer schools, and a lot of the state schools that accept mostly or all in state with lower DAT scores. Also schools like UPR, howard, and meharry bring down averages.

edit: I was personally told by a CODA/dent school faculty member that most schools are aiming for 20 and 3.5 as being the "fairly competitive" benchmark.

Also even if the 19 benchmark was the go to number for admission, then that would probably imply that that score is coupled with a >3.5 gpa. Just my assumption though.

I think OP just wanted a general idea. In that case, it's around 19. "Most" schools are below a 19.5. I can't really tell what you're trying to say here. 😀

Schools like Harvard and Columbia bring up the averages. That's why they're averages. :meanie:

OP, an 18-20 encompasses like 80% of schools. A wise med school adcom once told me, "Beat the averages" 👍

I had several acceptances with a 19AA 19TS 20PAT

Isn't the average score set at 19 based on a bell curve distribution? As in, the average number of questions that people get correct signifies what a 19 should be?

*waits for doc toothache spreadsheet*

🙂

You never know. Go by the average, if you will, but I've also seen some with super high DATs and GPAs and only 1 or 2 interviews or folks with 15s on certain sections of the DAT (17 or 18 is usually the cut off) can still get accepted.

I've heard 19 as the average and 20 as the somewhat "magic" number to try and get to from several admissions peoples like that of a 30 on the MCAT.

30 on MCAT is 73.9-79.1 percentile.

20 on DAT's AA is 89.7 percentile.

If 30 on the MCAT is the magic number, the more equivalent magic number for the DAT's AA should be 19 which is 80.5 percentile.

all depends on the version of the exam. the %s are situational

I doubt different versions have different percentiles.

I've been reading the breakdowns here for a while now.

One thing I've noticed is that your percentile will vary depending on the time of year you take it. If you took it early in February and got a 20 your percentile might be around 90%. But if you got that same 20 in December the percentile would be around a 85 instead.

If someone knows more please correct me.

A 20 in June was >93 percentile.

The percentiles vary by exam... That is why only the standardized scores are sent to the schools. A 20 could be 95% one week and 81% the next week. It has nothing to do with the when you take it. They use different exams. You could have two different raw scores from two different exams but have the same standardized score.

+1, the % are really just to make you feel good and have no impact on admissions since they don't really see them. Granted, it's anecdotal evidence on my part but I'm just passing it along 😛

Just my suggestion: Please don't read too much into this website. I went crazy during the application process because of SDN. I was fortunate enough to receive several acceptances with a 19AA/18TS and a <17 PAT score. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

PS: Take a look at the ADEA Guide of 2012 or 2013 for reliable information. Its the most accurate.

Thank you everyone for all of the responses! 😀

I guess I let SDN get to my head a little since ~19 seems to be "the number" but I understand it's just an average and dependent on both the applicant and school.
I actually have 19/19/20 AA/TS/PAT and trying to decide if I should retake since I have a low GPA but am currently in a one year SMP.

Nah, your dat scores show you know what you're doing on an exam.

Crush your smp to demonstrate you can hack dental school.
