Hi Guys-

Are board scores as important for military residencies as they are for civilian residencies? For example, is there anything I would not be able to do with a step 1 score of 224/93. Was hoping for a higher, but whatever.

Regards,

The most important consideration when applying for a residency is whether or not an applicant completed a GMO tour. An applicant with average scores who completed a GMO tour will be selected over an intern with high scores.

224 is above average, but definitely wouldn't guarantee a spot in many competitive fields including derm, EM (in the military), ortho, ophtho etc. I don't think you've taken yourself out of the running, but you also haven't distinguished yourself. Your board scores probably won't hurt or help much.

A 224 combined with good grades and a good audition rotation will make you competitive for everything except possibly Derm and Ophthalmology. Not a shoe in by any means, but competitive.
