How often is call taken as an academic neurosurgeon vs. as a private practice neurosurgeon? I know most of private neurosurgery is spine, but are there major differences in the types of responsibilities or procedures between academics and private practice neurosurgeons while on call?

Also, what does 1:2, 1:3, 1:4 etc call mean?

It depends on the neurosurgeon and the center. It can vary a lot.

1:X just means that every Xth night you are the one taking new patients and dealing with patient problems.

Is this the same as "QX" call?
