Hello,
For Penn State's secondary, one question asks for a unique component of my application. Would overcoming an huge obstacle and achieving excellence be considered a unique component of my application? thanks

I think so, but maybe it depends on the obstacle.

taking a heavy courseload and doing lots of ecs != obstacle

If the obstacle is unique, then you are unique :)

I think overcoming an obstacle could be seen as unique. For example, overcoming cancer as a child or growing up in an extremely poor houehold could be seen as unique. Like mentioned I don't think volunteering all the time or having an ear infection the day of the MCAT can be classified as unique. Good Luck.
