The Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services has posted technology assessments for vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty (both suggesting insufficient evidence to draw conclusions)...anyway they are meeting next week (May 24, 2005)...no pain physicians on the panel (just orthopods/neurosurgeons/radiologists)....to discuss the merits of the procedure

hopefully, they won't strike down these procedures....

ironically, vertebroplasty/ kyphoplasty (along with celiac plexus neurolysis and ITpumps for cancer pain), in my experience are the only 'no brainers' in interventional pain....all other procedures that we have in interventional pain (though they may help people)....lack the level of data the above procedures have...

if the CMS decides to apply the chronic disease management (which is why I think they are studying PVP/kyphoplasty) model for pain patients like they plan to do for diabetes/HTN....it will spell trouble for anyone who picks up a needle to treat pain.
