Hi pathologists!!!!!! I am a IMG who want`s to be a pathologist, but everyone is discouraging me .They say it is the worst possible choice & I am going to be unemployed. But I have always wanted to be a patholigist & I am very sad. Can someone help me shut these people( all doctors)?

It's funny. I had a similar problem when I told some docs that I was applying to medical school. Then, when I said I was thinking of Pathology, many of them gave me similar reactions as you describe. However, I found that most of the negative comments came from docs who really don't enjoy their jobs anymore for one reason or another (none of them Pathologists, either).

On the other hand, the pathologists that I work for are all very supportive, and have given me nothing but encouragement about going to medical school, and about my interest in pathology. They tell me that Pathology needs good people, and are extremely willing to teach, or provide advice.

Don't let anyone get you down about your career path! The important thing is that you choose a specialty that you love and gives your life meaning. :)

Oh please. Those negative people are just unhappy with their own lives, like Brian said.

I've met tons of miserable surgeons, family practice docs, OB/GYNs, etc. and NEVER have I met a pathologist who is anything less than totally happy.

As for not finding a job... hardly... I don't know how it is in your part of the country but I would assume that it is similar everywhere... here in my area there is going to be a mass wave of retirement of pathologists in about 5 or 6 years, creating tons of spots and desperate employers. I expect to be done w/ my path residency right about then. :)

There are unhappy pathologists too, hehe. I think that is just a common human condition to every job.
