How common is surgery for dog kidney stones by vets?
Is ther ultrasound to break up the stones instead?

Most kidney stones don't require direct treatment unless they're causing an obstruction or recurrent infection, or maybe if the dog only has one good kidney and the stone is causing reductions in renal function. So most of the time they're managed medically, either for dissolution or prevention of growth depending on the stone type. Surgical removal or shock wave lithotripsy are both usually going to be referral treatments not done by general practice vets. Lithotripsy is not widely available even at referral centers.
