alright, this is a pre-med infiltrating the med forum, but I seriously doubt pre-meds would know the answer to this question. Why would someone take a double residency? Are they common? In what fields would it help and in what fields do people do them?

I'd suggest browsing the Combined Residencies forum here, although don't post those questions since they've been addressed many times before.

You can also find lists of approved residencies leading to double or triple board eligibility on FREIDA (if you don't know what that is, Google is your friend).

Common combined residencies that I can think of off the top of my head:
- Internal Medicine/Pediatrics (4 yrs)
- Internal Medicine/Psychiatry (5 yrs)
- Internal Medicine/Emergency Medicine (5 yrs)
- Psychiatry/Pediatrics/Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (not sure of length)

Of these IM/Peds is by far the most common. There are also some combos involving neuro and family medicine, I think.

Why would someone do them? Often because of interest in both fields and a desire to have a career that in some way combines them. It is much debated, just as with dual degree programs, whether this is realistic and whether most people just end up practicing in one field anyway.

thank you! great help. and sorry. I didn't know that it was a common question.

Most common of these is IM/Peds. One nice thing about that is that by doing the combined residency, you can do a fellowship in either discipline either immediately or later down the road. One family medicine doctor I used to know says that if he had to do it all over again, he would go IM/Peds. That way if he ever decided his earning potential was too low as a general practitioner, he would have the opportunity to do a fellowship for a more lucrative career. The FM fellowships don't really offer that benefit.

I believe that there are also hematology/oncology programs out there. Good luck finding what your looking for :)

Those are fellowships after an internal medicine residency. Heme/onc and pulmonary/critical care are frequently combined and many people do practice in both. The controversy about combined residencies does not seem to extend to these programs.

FP/Psych - generally 5 years

Also some people do the combined residency to pursue specialized training. For e.g. after doing EM/IM you can do a ABIM-critical care fellowship, and practice as an emergency critical care specialist.
