EP application season for 2020 start date

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Does anyone know if Michigan is giving prematch? Did not get that impression on the interview day. But my friend told me that may be the case..

I hope not. There is already enough confusion and if some programs now start offering out of match positions, it will make this all the more complicated

Anyone heard if Boston or any California programs sent any invites yet?

Boston University School of Medicine/Boston Medical Center today. Also Henry Ford Hospital has already picked applicants, likely internal, but they are going through ERAS. University of Indiana also have filled internally from what I heard.

Yes that’s true. Emory is filled internally as well. For Cleveland Clinic I heard something similar as well.

Anyone heard about Hopkins?

Or Penn, Duke, WashU, NYU, Columbia, Sinai, Methodist, the entire state of California, the entire city of Chicago? Seems like there are a lot still outstanding. Looking at old threads, it looks like gen cards usually boluses interview invites in mid to late August, but I feel like that's probably not extrapolatable to EP given that they get only like 1/10th of the applications so it shouldn't take as long to review them and decide. That being said, I guess they're both on the same timeline for a December match day, so what's the rush?

The wild card here has been learning how many programs are planning to fill internally yet still signed up to take ERAS applications. Ridiculous.

Yup. Nice waste of our money to apply to these programs and then find out that they are already filled.

NYU will most probably send invites next week. Their interview date is Sep 20..

Gainesville used to have advertised on their site that they are full. I called and asked before ERAS opened and they said they are not full and will participate. I imagine they too are filling internally.

HRS has been pushing for every program to participate in the match and I also suspect many programs are pressured to open applications even if they are full.

Planning on only actually attending a handful of interviews. A lot less than I did for general cardiology. This is so much less competitive and more straightforward.

That sounds reasonable. I am thinking of anywhere between 6-7 as well.

I kick off the interview session tomorrow. I'm not sure yet how many I will attend. A lot depends on how many interviewees programs are inviting. If it's a small number, then 6-7, whereas if the programs are interviewing the top 40 candidates, I may go to some more. There are certain geographical locations I would like to avoid if possible...

That being said, a PSA to everyone to cancel interviews as early as possible. I think past a certain date, programs can’t replace your interview spot with another applicant, so it’s not really fair to them or other candidates hoping to interview at those places.

Good luck to everyone!

Anybody heard from University of Rochester? My priority is to get matched in a program near Toronto since my family is based there.

I have not.

What is the difference between the two Case Westerns?

One is University Hospital, probably the main campus for Case Western and the other one has affiliation with the university. But they are 2 different programs.

Both arent good programs in my opinion as the elephant in the city- Cleveland Clinic devours all the volume

I know folks who’ve graduated from both CW programs - yes Cleveland Clinic is definitely the big dog there but the CW programs have rotations set up at the Clinic to get similar experiences for certain things (HF, nucs, etc).

where are you hearing about these places filling internally? emailing program coordinators?

Just a reminder again to cancel interviews you will not likely show up for with plenty of notice if possible so the programs can invite other applicants. I was interviewing at a program in the midwest last week with 3 no-shows. As has been discussed on here previously, that kind of thing isn't fair to programs or potential applicants who could take those spots if given enough notice.

This is ridiculous! They should clarify this before accepting ERAS applications. What a rip off!

FYI. I communicated with one of the EP faculty at Ohio State and he said that he is not aware of internal applicants filling the EP positions at their program. May be he is missing something but it seems unlikely that they have filled and one of their EP faculty is unaware of it.

Good to know; thanks. I think this has all been illustrative of how SDN is really just a glorified rumor mill. It was also said on here that “all the Boston programs filled internally,” which was shortly followed by MGH and BWH both sending out invites nationally. Everything on here should be taken with a whole box of salt.

I wonder if programs are interviewing more applicants this year than usual with the move toward match and last year's experience.
It's been an interesting ride so far, suspect things might get more hairy if programs start to get cold feet about a match haha though I really hope everyone sticks with it

Been great to follow along this thread! everyone has beat me to posting the few interviews I've received haha. Very up to date

Yes just confirmed Ohio State news (which was relayed to me through some second hand information) and it seems they will be interviewing. Stanford for sure is taking internals so I will be highly surprised if they send out invites. Same with Cleveland Clinic although news is they will still invite some external applicants just to be safe.

Sorry to clarify, mm3794, you confirmed that they filled internally as mentioned earlier (and that they are interviewing maybe some just in case applicants) or you confirmed that this was only a rumor (and that they are interviewing for real)?
Thanks! Of course not holding ya to it but interested to hear whatever info you have

If you are talking Stanford, I communicated directly with my source (who is an EP fellow there) and confirmation was done through that. So again I will be surprised if Stanford send any invites. Ohio State news was relayed to me by two applicants from Ohio and they both told me it is filling internally. Since two different people told me same thing about Ohio State I thought it would be true. Should not be posting with out direct confirmation.

Still waiting to hear from Colorado, UMN, VCU, Northwestern. Anyone heard from these? Also, have you all started to email programs you haven't heard from?

Same with UCSF, UC San Diego, U of Chicago. No news.

Or the elephant in the room, Penn? I know they are pretty malignant, but anyone know anything about them or their timeline?
