Progesterone levels are maintained throughout pregnancy- first stimulated by the corpus luteum and then by the placenta. Are estrogen levels also maintained during pregnancy? If so, what stimulates release of the hormone?

Estrogen also secreted by corpus luteum and subsequently by the placenta. Both estrogen and progesterone serve as negative feedback agents on gonadotropin-releasing hormone because you don't want to commence another menstrual cycle when you're pregnant.

Just like progesterone, estrogen is secreted by the corpus luteum until the placenta takes over. Estrogen also plays a key role in the development of the fetus, with several organs and other bodily systems in the fetus triggered into development by estrogen. At the end of the first 9 weeks, estrogen levels plateau. The hormone acts to stimulate hormone production in the fetus's adrenal gland, it stimulates growth of the adrenal gland, and it enhances the mother's uterus, enabling it to respond to oxytocin once it is time to do so.

Good luck!
