Hello everyone,
I`ve noticed that residents, in many FM residency programs, are mostly women.
Do programs prefer women over men in FM, or is it just more women graduating from med schools ?

Roughly 50% of med school grads are women nowadays. Many women choose to go into relatively family-friendly fields like peds, FM, OB-gyn, etc. I imagine it's not unusual to find an FM residency where more than half the residents are female.

I'm sure one of our colleagues in academic medicine can provide the exact statistics.

It seems like we get a pretty even number of applications from men and women. No preference for one or the other when it comes time to rank, though.

Good to know that. Thank you all.

My class was 52% female.
But most of them went to Ob/Gyn, Paeds, Derm and Ophth.
Now when I look up programs online and check out the residents in FM and Gen.Surg, many have >50% female residents, and some classes are all females.
I just thought programs prefer F over M in FM.
