Would like some help in understanding management of folate-deficiency anemia.
For methotrexate-induced folate deficiency anemia, I have come up with this summary from a UW question:
a) once the anemia develops, treat with folinic acid [this is more potent than just using folic acid]
b) for patients on methotrexate, they should take folic acid prophylaxis [to prevent anemia from developing]
A UW question basically demonstrated a patient with macrocytic anemia on MTX and asked for the treatment, folic acid or folinic acid. The answer explanation says folinic acid should be used for methotrexate-induced folate deficiency anemia.
So I was wondering: How do you treat folate deficiency anemia from malnutrition/alcoholism, with folinic acid or folic acid?
