"Funny quotes from 'less informed' pre-meds," On-Topic Edition

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
"You know, surgeons work really hard and are under a lot of pressure, so I think they definitely deserve to be paid well. Now MD's on the other hand (I suppose she is referencing PCP or just non-surgical specialties), they just write down your symptoms and go type them in the computer and the computer gives them the diagnosis. They don't do anything, they get paid wayyyy to much."

I've become aware that a healthy chunk of the population believes that "blood tests" work approximately the same way. The common belief seems to be that pathologists have a machine/iPhone app that just reads a blood sample and pops a diagnosis up on the screen.

Hospitalized friend/family member: "Why are they taking more blood? They already did a blood test!"
Me: "Well, they tested for X, Y, and Z, but now they need to test for A and B."
Friend/family member: "Why wouldn't A and/or B have turned up in the first blood test?"
Me: "Don't worry about it. Just get some sleep. Please. Now."

And I think now with many doctors taking computers into the room to collect notes for paperwork, patients think they are simply googling the problem or something...

Yep.

Honestly PCP's really do need to get paid more, or have some other incentives to get med students to go into primary care. Because right now with a 250k+ debt med students avoid primary care and is causing a shortage. The shortage of PCP's in a lot of areas is badddd

Don't worry, NP's will fix that problem!

pardon me for being a necro-thread-mancer, but I remembered something. I was catching up with a former acquaintance this summer...

conversation in a nutshell:

I: So... how's life?

She: so-so... I am a little upset I got a C- in Physiology (again) and Physics 2, and I failed Intro to Kinesiology....

I: Are you gonna retake them?

she: Nah, I think I can get 4.0s during senior year, and doing a gap year will get me into PT school!!!

She later lamented that she wouldn't accept a job that paid less than ~120k if she received her DPT :wtf:

Me: Hey I heard you were a interested in a career in medicine?

Student: Yeah I'm going to med school next year

Me: Oh, so you've taken your MCAT and been accepted?

Student: No but i'm going.

Me: Have you taken your MCAT yet?

Student: No

Me: have you done your chemistry pre reqs yet?

Student: No not yet, I know organic chemistry is required but not inorganic.

U fuken wot m8.

Young freshman Student: I'm getting my bachelors in psych because its a prereq to be a psychiatrist
Me: You know you can major in anything you want right?
Student: Yeah but i'm going to grad school first so I can save up money for medical school later on because that **** is expen$iv.

Different student expressed an interest in plastic surgery:
Me: What would you do if you landed in family medicine?
Student: Probably cry - I don't want to do that my whole life.

How does one "land" in family medicine? I was under the impression that you have to apply for, interview for and match into a residency. Unless you are blindly clicking about your eras I suppose.

Here's one from a year ago, after we got out of orgo.

*Us talking about college majors before medical school*

Her: Yea, med schools hate bio majors.

Me: Is that so? I mean I get that they receive a lot of apps from bio majors, but that doesn't mean they hate them.

Her: Yea they hate them, the only major they like is math.

Me:

She wasn't even a math major. Don't know where she gets these ideas from.

Low board scores? I would guess that most people don't just quit medicine if they aren't competitive for their choice residency program going into medical school.

I was in my docs office 2 years ago, and at the time I knew nothing at all about medical school. He had an MS3 with him on rotations. After he addressed my medical concerns, I started to talk to them about the road to becoming a doctor.

Me: (smiling hard as ****): So...both of you...was this your first choice in residency?
Ms3: enters full panic mode, eyes darting back and forth staring at the floor
PCP: waits for the MS3 to answer
Ms3: does not answer after about 10 seconds
PCP: Well she doesnt know what she wants to do yet. (proceeds on a semi rant about how the field of primary care requires more knowledge of all systems than specialists)

Now I know why I made her so uncomfortable. I literally knew nothing about the process! She clearly did NOT want to go into primary care lol.

This wasn't from a pre-med but made me go :uhno:

So this girl who I am somewhat friends with says:

"You know, surgeons work really hard and are under a lot of pressure, so I think they definitely deserve to be paid well. Now MD's on the other hand (I suppose she is referencing PCP or just non-surgical specialties), they just write down your symptoms and go type them in the computer and the computer gives them the diagnosis. I was appalled, but it made me realize that a lot of the public probably thinks the same thing...

I had a sociology discussion board about the medicalization of deviance and the sick role. I had to restrain myself from going off on kids. The professors must drive themselves mad reading the daft comments on those boards.

"doctors should quit being lazy and find cures rather than giving people medication"
"the medicalization of mental disorders is just an excuse for not being able to control your behaviors"

At work in my lab with a couple second year surgery residents and we had this little college sophomore shadowing in the lab and learning about surgical research. Visiting Immunology PhD student comes in and is chatting us up.

Premed: "So where are you hoping to do your residency?"
PhD student: "Oh I'm a PhD student, not an MD student"
Premed: "Awe, I'm sorry to hear that man. Why didn't you get into medical school?"

An eternity of awkard silence follows...

A couple years back, when I was still in undergrad:

Scrolling down Facebook and I run across a status update that read something like this...

Guy: "Sigh, life of a medical student.. I have many decisions to make, so much to study, so little time". <- clearly talking about himself.

Homie was in my Immunology class.

Yeah, you're probably just @mcatjelly
currently in that boat since I transferred and had to redo my chemistry courses because I went from PT to Pre-med so the chems didn't transfer. Lets just say trying to teach yourself organic is not fun.

Do you mind disclosing your undergraduate institution? That's remarkably similar to something I've experienced in a sociology class.

did you go to a CC? Im pretty sure its part of the required curriculum for any 101 course in sociology.
There's no real required curriculum for sociology. I spent the whole time learning about how classism is a greater influence than racism, sexism, etc. combined.

I was one of those presumptuous premed ass hats my freshman and sophomore year of college. Couldn't hack it so I switched out.
My dumb ass would ace tests but not do the assignments.

"Oh I'm smart I wanna be a doctor. Oh actually now I'm going to be a nurse since I don't want to take calculus. Actually now I want to coach college basketball"... 4 majors later and I'm not even close to that now lol. I think about the arrogant **** I used to say and want to palm my face. Every time.

Talked to a pre-med student that I volunteer with the other day... I am now out of college, but she is a junior still in undergrad...

Her: Do you know what kind of doctor you want to be?
Me: Not sure, trying keep an open mind. How about you?
Her: I know I don't want to be a regular doctor.
Me: :eyebrow: What do you mean a regular doctor? Are there irregular doctors?
Her: You know a regular doctor... the one you see all the time.
Me: You mean a primary care physician?
Her: Yes, that! I don't want to be that- sounds boring.

The conversation ended there- I could not even entertain it. :bang:
This really scares me, though. It is baffling how many pre-meds have no idea what they're talking about.

So I went to visit my best friend (not a premed though) who recently gave birth. We were talking about what specialty I should go into if I get into med school, and she said "omg you should be an Ob/Gyn. Their job is sooo easy. My Ob/Gyn was literally around for 5 minutes to help me give birth and it's the nurses that took care of the rest. So the doctor have it so easy."
I was speechless.

Lol this could not be more true! Upon telling people that I want to go to medical school, I have many times had to clarify that I mean I want to be a doctor. The conversation is always something like this...

Me: I want to go to medical school.
Other: Oh awesome! So you want to be a nurse? Or physical therapist? Dentist?
Me: .... MEDICAL school.
This just happened to me yesterday. I said "Actually I want to be a janitor but going to medical school is the best way to break into the field." I apologized after for being a sarcastic jerk

HA that ranks up there with the "all PCP's do is uptodate the illness or whatever".

Thanks a lot, webmd.

Talking with a clinic coworker who interviewed at a state school, recently. Chatting about his interview and med school because that's what you do when all you have in common is the gauntlet you're both running. Somehow, we get on the MCAT.

Senpai : You did alright on the MCAT, then?

Michael Cera Lookin' Mafk : Ya, I did good enough to get in, but decided to take it again -- you know -- because they say you should just try again because you might do better.

Senpai : (internally) Nope. Not a thing. (externally) Huh, ok.

Mafk : And I actually did worse the second time.

.......

At least he got an interview. Apparently, they didn't even mention his repeat MCAT score

I overhead this in a coffee shop a couple of days ago.

PreMed A: I registered for my MCAT today, I am already getting a little nervous for it.
B: Why on earth would you be nervous?
A: Well, everything is becoming very real now. And you know, this test kind of determines if I can go into my dream career or not.
B: I don't know why everyone makes the MCAT seem like such a big deal, it's only one component of your application.
A: True, but it's an important component.
B: No it's not. For instance if you get a bad score you can just rack up enough hours and they will completely ignore your MCAT scores.
A: That's definitely not how it works, they never ignore your MCAT score.
B: I know someone who got a crap score, but still got in because he had lots of experience.
A: What's crap and where did they go?
B: Idk but they went to the best school in the Caribbeans.
A: ....

I was initially excited thinking that it was a very intelligent conversation. But 'B' took it pretty downhill and 'A' gave up. I seriously wanted to give her a pat on the shoulder for trying.

I actually know someone who got a 24 on the MCAT and got into an US MD school. She was a sorority girl with a ton of hours of service stemming back over 7 years. She also had the highest GPA in her class. Shes going on residency interviews now at a ton of big names.

Thats not unheard of for HBCUs though.

So yeah I matched with this girl on tinder who revealed on her profile that she wanted to "go onto psychiatry and work in a child's mental health section at a place like Shepard Pratt."

Me: "so psychiatry eh? Take your MCAT yet?

Her: "no not yet. My plan is to get an associates in psychology at [insert no name community college], then go to a four year and major in biology, then take my mcat (because that's what you need to take to go to med school right?) then go into pre-med then med.

Um...

Possibily the most common ignorance of the path to medicine comes from those who say they want to be a psychiatrist (if they are even aware it takes medical school in the first place)...."I'm a great listener."

P.s. I wanted to be a psychiatrist throughout adolescence and was clueless on many things.

I'm just hoping that they got some sort of fee assistance that made this possible. I can't imagine spending $300 and a whole day sitting for the MCAT just for practice.
I did this. Had a death in the family and funeral the week prior, so I didn't really trust myself to be in the right mind to take it. They also don't give refunds that late barring military service, so I figured I might as well take it, feel it out, and void if I'm spending $300 either way.

Unless this person signed up for the exam knowing in advance it was just practice, in which case...sociopath alert.

Also, fellow premed freshman year who got his NREMT before coming to college.

(ignorant freshman) Me: Yea man I really don't know anything about med school, but I know I want to be a pediatrician. It all seems pretty complicated.
Premed: Yea I'm basically just gonna do EMT, and then get my Paramedic.
Me: what does that mean for med school?
Premed: Well they have these programs that get you more training from EMT.
Me: What?
Premed: Yea I read that you do EMT, then get your medic, then they have a 6 month program to get your NP, and then from there, I'm sure its like another year to get your MD. Best part is that it's all paid for that way.
Me: Yea sure dude I'll look into that ( :wtf: )

Lol. Just a quick word to the wise to all you new med students or pre-meds shadowing in the hospital. ALWAYS assume a higher rank if you're addressing someone you don't know. If you think they're a resident ask them if they're an attending. If you think someone's a med student, ask them if they're a resident, etc. You'll never go wrong assuming someone is a higher rank but will/can piss people off addressing them as a lower rank.

Having a conversation with this 5th year bio major I volunteer with about why I didn't choose bio as my major and how we think things will play out in medical school.

Him:
I'm not worried about medical school curriculum. I honestly will breeze right through the first 1.5 years of medical school because I'm taking a few 'more in-depth bio courses' (histology, medical terminology, pathology).
Me: :eyebrow::uhno: Dude, the stuff we cover in undergrad barely scratches the surface. It will help the first week or two maybe, but the entire M1 and half of M2...?
Him: Yeah, I know orthopedic surgeons... blah blah blah mad connections. Plus, I'm going to get my masters in Bio which will be really easy (he has a borderline 3.0).
Me: Ah yeah, sure you're totes right.

The arrogance is real. Like dude seriously?? And to think hes on the committee for our school's pre-health association. If that was the case, take a couple courses undergrad and boom you're half way to being a doctor...... everyone would do it!:wtf:

I find the people who say that kind of stuff are just totally far gone and just have no idea what they are in for.

I find people who are very academically qualified who actually know what they are getting into still worry they may not make it.

The difference between these two kinds of people is like the distance between Saturn and Earth.
