Goldfrank's is a pretty good book and aimed at EPs. If that is too much, Ket Olsen wrote a far more concise book that is very treatment oriented. EMRA has an essentials pocket style book that hits the very high points.

Goldfrank's can be pretty dense; is actually targeted at Med Tox fellows.

Toxicology Secrets (Erickson/Ling) is great, but I think out of print... can look for used, though.

Lange's Poisoning & Management is also very good; the best of what I'd consider the "EP-level" tox books... great algorithms, tells you the essentials, is easy to throw into a shift bag.

Just my $0.02,

If you rotate through New York Poison Control Center (NYU) the fellows sell a sweet book on tox. It's in a spiral binder, good overview. I think it was like $35 or $40.

So I looked for Toxicology Secrets as I 'm a fan of Erickson, but I don't have $400 to spend. Is it possible to get a hold of this spiral bound tox book from NYU from far away? So you have any other info on it?

I used Pediatric Toxicology during my med student rotation. At 500 pages, it's probably more detailed than a med student really needs, but I knew I wanted to do tox, and I had plenty of time to read while on the rotation, so....

Casarett & Doull's Essentials of Toxicology vs Toxicology Handbook, 2e vs Poisoning and Drug Overdose

Anyone familiar with all three and have a recommendation?
http://www.amazon.com/Casarett-Doul...=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1334368220&sr=1-2
http://www.amazon.com/Toxicology-Ha...=sr_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1334368220&sr=1-3
http://www.amazon.com/Poisoning-Ove...r_1_14?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1334368241&sr=1-14

The system based approach to Essentials is appealing. Seems like a good way to build a foundation...

I've only used the Olsen book. It is a good quick reference with Need It Right This Second information. Many fellows have used it a quick reference, especially early in fellowship.

I haven't used Toxicology Handbook.

I've read the full Casarett and Doulls. It is a heady book, heavy on basic science (lots of histopathology). It is really good for a pharmacy focused toxicology course and probably pretty good for the Occupational Toxicologist. I'm not sure how much of that carries over to the essentials book.

Not knowing your specific application, it is tough to point you in the right place.

Sorry, should have mentioned that in my post. I'm a soon-to-be MS4 planning to go into EM with a strong interest in toxicology. I just wanted a short primer on toxicology to make my way through in my spare time. Trying to focus more on the foundational stuff like general concepts, mechanisms of action, and pathophysiology.

In case any other medical students come looking at this thread in the future, I went with Poisoning and Drug Overdose by Olsen. It seems to cover the key points for basic science background, clinical considerations, and treatment. As a bonus it would still be useful as a portable reference guide if you end up getting one of the full-fledged textbooks...

I had a chance to skim through the Casarett & Doull's Essentials of Toxicology book and it seemed too superficial; geared more for the undergraduate level. Never got a look at the Toxicology Handbook but it seemed a little too concise.

I agree. As stated in an earlier post, Olsen's book (Lange's Poisoning & Drug Overdose) is probably the best all-around resource for a practicing emergency physician. Hits all the essential points for diagnosis, management, and treatment; and can be thrown in your bag to take to a shift.

Most of the other ones fall into Goldilocks syndrome - too broad, too deep, too superficial, etc...

Cheers!

ps - I should add that I do not hold a financial stake in the Olsen book. I just have a lot of books. A lot. And I know which ones I used as a fellow and still use as an attending... Olsen is one of them.
