35) A student observes that when an ice cube floats in a glass of water, part of the ice cube projects above the surface of the water. When the ice cube melts, the level of the water surface will:

  1. go down slightly.
  2. go up slightly.
  3. remain the same.
  4. change depending on the weight of the ice cube.

Can someone explain this one?

Because the ice cube is already floating in water. It has already displaced volume of water equal to its weight so when it melts there's no NET change in water volume.
Archimedes principle is being applied here.
